I'm 64 years old and would like to buy a quality GSD. I looked at a nice female GSD, but the seller wanted to have breeding rights to the dog when she was of age to breed and she would pick the stud and have pick of the litter too. I didn't like the conditions she offered and declined to purchase the puppy. It came from Germany and this lady was a reputable breeder and has quality dog. I thought if I buy this dog it is my choice as what I want to do regarding her breeding.
I am interested in the DDR, Czech breeds. My first question is, am I a little to old to have a puppy as I won't have the energy this puppy would have and would have trouble keeping up with it and meeting the requirements to be a good owner. Would an older puppy or dog be a better choice. I've had some breeders of other dogs say you may not know what you are buying and could be buying someone else's problem.
I worked with horses for years and my training method was repitition and kindness. Always end the training session on a good routine which the horse knew and give alot of praise. Don't let the horse win, you have an animal that weighs 1,000 lbs or more, you have to be able to control it and make it obey. I feel the same method would work on a dog with some adjustments for lack of a better expression.
I am retired and could put time into training the dog too or reinforce the training which has already been taught to the dog.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and any recommendations of a good breeder of the DDR or Czech breed would be appreciated too.
Thank You, David

Hi David,
I too like to fully own my dog, but if a breeder wants to have a right on breeding of a puppy then that puppy is a special one and who else would know better than its breeder !, just a thought. Good luck with your search, you've come to the right place for help.

Young gsds require a lot of mental stimulation and physical activity. I have both young and old. I suggest you adopt one of the thousands of retired from show home adults. They come in many ages and levels of training. I have one that came to me two years ago. It has been an absolute joy in my life to have him. Please keep in mind many senio dogs are being dumped after they gave all that was asked of them. You can even try out many retired dogs from breeders to see if you suit well with the dog. I will never regret giving my retired senior dog a place in our family.

David, if you really want a dog at your age, the best advise I could give you is GO FOR IT---NOW!!! Dont put it off. You will be glad you did. And no, you are not too old. Not by a long shot. ecs
