I can't post links on the database anymore, but this morning, Yahoo has a story about a yellow lab named Harley, a canine with the Des Moines PD, that died when left in a police cruiser.
WHY does this keep happening? I'd like to see PDs set a new rule: anyone who leaves their K9 for any length of time in the cruiser without the AC running will be REMOVE from the K9 unit!
If us ignorant regular dog-owners know enought not to do this, why doesn't the PD??
Every year in the summer, our local media has a blitz to educate people about the dangers of pets being left in cars even when the temperatures MAY seem cool enough outside. How come K9 officers don't get the message?
Sad, so sad....

I'd rather see them removed from the police force! Accidents will happen BUT something like this is preventable in many cases, save for AC
or alarm malfunction. An officer who disregards life, be it human or K9, has no place in LE JMHO!

I read about a dog dying recently because the AC and alarm unit failed. I'm not an LEO but I just don't trust AC or those alarm systems. If it's hot then I park in the shade and open the windows.

If you can't take the dog out of the car and with you then leave it at home or in the kennel. I don't trust AC or alarms either. I doubt that Lab was a K9 used in apprehension of criminals like a GSD trained to bite. More likely a drug dog. If he wasn't there to sniff something out, why was he in the car? What was the two footed officer doing at the time? Was he inside an AC office doing paperwork, inside a place of business taking a statement? That dog is a LEO and should be allowed anywhere his partner is. Don't tell me the dog was an inconvenience and left in the car for some assinine reason. Was the officer involved in a foot chase that took him away for so long that he couldn't get back to his dog? Is it possible he got tied up with the apprehension of a crook and he was the only officer involved? There wasn't another officer who could relieve him long enough to check on his dog? Too many unanswered questions. Another dog pays the price and we most likely won't get all the details. Come on, convince me this could not have been avoided.

Same thing happened last month in Phoenix of all places. Any officer so stupid or uncaring should be fired or worse. Its heartbreaking.
At the very least they can tie the dog outside the vehicle with a bowl of water where the dog can scoot under the vehicle for shade, muzzled if necessary.

Actually Sunsilver, the SAD truth, according to a Denver newspaper is, that thousands of pets die every year left in hot vehicles, by everyday pet people. It just isn't news worthy to write about, unless it is a police officer
In that same article about how many pets die each year, forgotten by their owners, one included a German Shepherd, whose owner was a veterinarian, is a article oabout a collar, that should be on the market in 2013, for less than $20, that sends instant message to owner when temp exceeds the danger zone . Now that sounds fantastic since these days a person can forget their dogs a lot quicker than they forget their phones!

Yes this is all very sad, and I agree with Sunsilver, they should be punished by losing their job if they do such a horrible thing to their "partners"

What would the punishment be for k9, if the rolls were reversed and the k9 killed his two legged partner? What's good for the goose should be good for the gander.
