I read the story and I start to think. I have to think that the dogs attacked were the agressive ones. Remember dog world there aren't yards. The dog that gets injured isn't always the victum and the dog that wins isn't always the agressive dog. IF the dog were aggressive he would of attacked the man. he would of attacked the people for restraining him.
Since the Big dog roams surely there would be other attacks. yet there is no mention.
My best guess as to what is going on is the newfoundland was protecting the neighborhood. This person dogs most likely barked agressivly and the newfoundland went to stop them.
A couple things that people don't know. Dogs barking is bad. It is agression. Even when it looks like they are happy and having fun. I know its hard to believe but never let your dog bark, at you, at the tree, at another dog.... DOG SHOULD NOT BARK..
For example I was at the dog park the other day and this great dame was walking around sniffing dogs. it went to this older dog, and the older dog started to growl. Then it barked. The Great Dane bit the dog. The great dane did the correct thing and immediatly let go. The owner shouldn't bring agressive dogs to the park.
I am not saying its good for a dog to bite, but if they do it to end agression its a good thing.
Since I wasn't there I can't say for sure what happened but this is what it sounds like to me. Its 5 years later so I would be curious to know what ever happened to the dogs in question.

I had a dog that bit a jogger and then let go. He thought he was protecting the homefront. The police and the victim weren't all that impressed that my dog bit her, and then let go. I'm glad he did but the rest of the world, Nah......

That is malarky. Barking is not always aggression. My Shepherd pup barks as his way of "communicating" when I get home. He's happy to see me. He has different types of barks however, that I knowing him can distinguish the difference between. My dogs have barked during play before, and in no way were they being aggressive.

Why have a dog, especially a GSD if you think barking is bad?
Is there such a dog that does not bark?
Sorry, but your statement is ridiculous.

My wife's Maltese barks more than she breaths. The little noisy pain in the ass. LOL

The smallest dog in my household (miniature dachshund) doesn't bark, she shrieks, does that count? LOL
Mantion, your conclusions are incorrect. A bark does not automatically translate into aggression, just like a person speaking words doesn't mean that the person is making threats.
The Great Dane (and it's owner) was in the wrong for biting another dog that it approached, it's action was not defensive, it was proactive aggression (most likely in dominance) the dog that growled and barked was being defensive of it's personal space/property and was using the correct mode of warning before taking action (whether that action was fight or flight.) The Great Dane should have shown respect and left the other dog alone.
The actions of the Newfoundland are completely out of character for it's breed. The Newfoundland was not being protective of the neighborhood, it had a serious case of dog aggression, plain and simple.
This statement below is going in my file of incredibly ignorant comments.
