I am new here on this site and I'm wondering if anyone has ever had the experience as I'm having now....I've had chihuahuas whelp plenty of times, but they let me know by most of the classic signs. My new girl, I knew, or thought I was pretty close...I noted as usual every single time I "witnessed" a tie, the date, the time and the amount of the tie. Then calculated as usual. She didn't look prego but vet of course said she was....All of sudden last week she swoll up, I mean overnight literally. That was two weeks ago. By my calculations, it shouldn't be till April 9, 2012. Well, today, of course a weekend....I was cleaning and she was running around as usual, but in an almost panicked way....I took her temp as I realized maybe the dates were off after checking the book several times....I'm never, ever more than a couple days either way. She is definately all of a sudden showing signs of "impending labor"....contractions the whole nine...
It's new to me...I've never seen a chihuahua go through the main stages without making sure I knew it and I was up right along with them....Anyways her temp is 37.0
I'm curious to know if anyone else has ever had a chi just bang, she's less than twelve hours away from actually giving birth with no signs of distress till today and they are very light...I know her so I can see the changes in faces, etc....but never have I seen one go through first stage or second without being very vocal....yes vet is aware and on speed dial. Any helpful comments are appreciated.

I'm sorry I am no help. I spayed my Chee, never having bred her.

Chihuahuas, Great Danes, or mixed breed--all can deliver prematurely [as in miscarry the litter] if the conditions to cause such are right; one also should keep in mind that some dogs go through 'silent' or 'split' heats, and perhaps she was bred earlier than you were aware during such an occurance. That she didn't look to be bred until last week, when she suddenly 'swole up' overnight would give me reason to be concerned that something may be amiss...Glad the vet is on speed-dial, hopefully they're on call 24 hrs, too, since this kind of stuff rarely goes wrong during regular office hours [so said hexe, after spending Saturday evening @ my vets' office with an 8 yr old male with bloat and torsion...]
Hope to see you post back again saying everything went OK, mom & pups are fine, and maybe she got bred during a silent or split heat and thus the 'early' litter.
Edited for 1 too many 'U's in Chihuahua. :)
