Ok I have a bicycle and I know many of you guys ride you bike with your dog so they can get some good exercise. I am just starting this for the 1st time. Please give me some tips so that I can avoid any injuries to the dog and myself...lol
I tried today for the first time and I saw right away I had to use a pinch on him b/c I need to keep control of him while trying to steer. Any good ways to hold the leash? How long (time wise) should I start out since we are just beginning?

have you tried the springer or similar product. If your dog is extremely drivey then it is uselss

The springer is an excellent product especially for high drive dogs. That is what I use.

Clk1234,
I can assure my dogs are high drive, yet well trained, under control and clear headed. Out of control does not equal high drive. If you want to see a real high drive dog I'll introduce you to mine anytime. I'm sure you will be very impressed.

Not stepping on Slams post, he has already said all that anyone needs to know.
An off/on leash heel, while riding your bike is pretty basic stuff.
Come on.......Really?
I can show you some real bad ass dogs riding alonside a bike off leash or on.

Thanks I will check into it.
Kim - He doesn't have a off leash heel yet. On leash isn't 100% reliable when there are distractions.

clk1234 I have a dog who has real drive towards real animals. He will kill absolutely any animal he can......With that said, I don't allow it, and I have the "walky dog" attachment. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=12526&cmpid=01csegpl&ref=6111&subref=AA&CAWELAID=525362035 It works very well. Something you can try.....if you want to give your dog some extra space, get one of those "two dog connectors" that allows you to connect two dogs on one leash. Basically I attach one clip of it to the clip on the walky dog.....and the other clip to the dogs harness. It will still absorb all of the pull from the dog even with that. On top of that, if it's a dog learning how to run properly put a leash on the dog connected to a collar for corrections. This way you can correct if the dog does want to keep looking back at something, or he's not paying attention. I started doing a little biking with Little Dude yesterday and today and I did this. One thing I did, if he looked back at something (like the little dog that ran out in the street barking at us) I went faster.....This made him have to keep up so his focus went to the job we were doing....Running! He did excellent. Buck was with him as well, and when Little Dude is trained well enough I will not only have Buck on it, but also Max since Buck and Max have done it so many times.

Ace- if he does not have an off leash heel yet, then work him on a leash heel with the bike.
Sit on your bike, and just slowly introduce your dog to walking beside the bike on a leash, or tie his leash to you etc.
He is a dog...treat him faily and properly instruct him in what you want him to do

Kim - Oh yeah I use a leash. Yeah it will take a minute so he knows to be right beside me. I will do as you suggest.
I felt this would be the best way to exercise and build up his endurance as walking doesn't completely do it. It was a toss up between a bike and roller blades. The bike won out since it was super cheap as my neighbor repairs and sells bikes.
Great info from everyone.
Thanks.
