So, this has nothing to do with any of my dogs......But I was talking to someone yesterday, their German Shepherd had intestinal cancer at the age of 3?  Can anyone tell me what type of cancer a dog would get at that age, and how being that young?  The dog also had a really bad skin condition that their vet said was genetic.   What kind of skin conditions are genetic? They had been feeding Wellness, no scraps or anything else.  However they ended up putting the dog down early this year because of the cancer.  Anyone have any ideas?

Demodex mange can be genetic or can flare up because of a compromised immune system. I have no idea about the cancer. NEVER heard of intestinal cancer at a young or old age! How was the diagnosis reached?

djc I'll ask them today how it was reached.  They didn't say when I talked to them yesterday, just that he had it.   My parents did have a Golden Retriever who had intestinal cancer (the vet said) when he was 13.

The only sure way that I know of to determine if a dog has intestinal cancer is to do surgery. Could be wrong though, but I've never heard of them scoping the bowels the way they do with humans.

If they discover cancer, they make a phone call to the owner, and the dog is often euthanized without being allowed to recover from the anesthesia. I was acutally present in the OR when such a decision was made. The dog was not young and had a huge tumor that involved the mesentery (the membrane that supports the bowels.)

I agree Sunsilver. But I want to hear how this particular case was dianosed.
Was the spleen or any other organ involved in your example Sunsilver?

Animals can get cancer at any age. My dog was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma at 3, which is young for that type of cancer. Although age, breed, and environmental factors can predispose an animal to a certain type of cancer, this does not preclude other types of cancers from occuring in breeds not predisposed to it or at an age that you might not expect.

of course they CAN get cancer at any age! Intestinal cancer is VERY rare in a young dog. Hence the inquiry.

...and my answer to that inquiry is the same, any animal can get cancer at any age. There are many, many factors involved in the mechanics of cancer cells, and the link provides most of the known factors. In fact, it states that "no specific cause(s) has been identified for most GI tumor types", so the only way to answer the question is the way that I have answered it.

edit: I guess that I need to clarify that by "inquiry", I am referring to the OP's original questions.

I didn't ask YOU, mollyandjack. I asked for specific case details which you do not have. I am well aware of all the well publish information you are able to retrieve on google searches.

Holy lord.

No one has the specific details.

Also, when I posted the above link, I was not posting it for your benefit, but for the OP, who specifically said, "Can anyone tell me what type of cancer a dog would get at that age, and how being that young".
