Hi, new to this site. Also new to the German Shepherd breed. I just got a pup he is 8 weeks old.
Can someone please tell me if his coloring is considered brindle or a sable? He was the only pup this color.
Thanks.

Is that him in your avitar?

Can you post more pics of him,

His body type and ear set reminds me of a Mastiff type dog...

What color are his parents and what color were his siblings?

One last ?....how much does he weigh?

Sorry for all the ?'s, his color is unique for a Shepherd....

color aside from here the coat or anything does not look gsd to me but a front photo and or parents photos would help.

even with this picture it is clear to me this is not a purebred GSD pup.  Short thin coat, dropped ears, thin tail, and of course the obvious - the brindle color - points to another breed - mastiff, boxer, pitbull perhaps.  Not purebred GSD.  Even if his color was black/tan the coat is not a GSD coat.  Not a purebred pup.  Do you have akc registration papers on this pup?  If so, what breeder did you buy him from?

I agree with the others, he looks Mastiff Mix to me.

In answer to your original question, Mfd, your pup's coloration would be described as brindle.

As everyone else has already indicated, he clearly is not a purebred German Shepherd. You say that he was the only pup in the litter with this coloration; what do the rest of the pups look like, not just color-wise but ear type and coat type?  It is entirely possible that your pup was fathered by a different dog than the rest of the litter--something that used to be considered impossible but which has now been proven to occur; if the pup's mother is a purebred German Shepherd, and she was intentionally bred to a purebred German Shepherd, the rest of the litter may well be purebred German Shepherds, but your pup's coat, coloration and physical structure prove that the mother was also accidently bred to a male other than the GSD... Could have been a mastiff, perhaps, or pit bull or American Staffordshire terrier, or a mix of one of those breeds.  Given the inclusion of your pup in the litter, if the rest of the litter is being sold as AKC-registered GSDs, the AKC really should be notified that the litter had more than one sire, and DNA testing needs to be done on the other pups to determine if they were actually sired by the registered GSD that is alleged to be the father.  Otherwise, the breeder of this litter could lose their AKC privilages.

He looks like a nice, healthy pup, regardless of whether he's a GSD or not, and personally I've always liked brindle coats...they're so very pretty.

Everyone is getting carried away and probably upsetting this new gsd owner.  Let's see more pics before we jump up and down.

There are still apparently some brindle genes floating around in the purebred gsd gene pool.  http://aringsburgkennel.blogspot.com/2009/08/brindle-german-shepherd-dog-lost.html

It appears that the brindle gene could be lurking in the gsd gene pool, hidden behind black dogs.  According to this, you would see it breaking up the sable pattern in sable dogs.  http://abnormality.purpleflowers.net/genetics/brindle.htm

mfd, it's funny an humourous for u to think or ask if d dog in that pool is a gsd. It's definitely "NOT!". And u MVF, Yes, the brindle gene could be somewhere, but definitely "dead". The links you posted had pictures of what i identified as "greyhound" or "whippet" cross. The first looked more of a greyhound\gsd cross. Brindle gsd is "DEAD"
