Mine do it all the time.  Loki used to open door knobs with his teeth, we had to set dead bolts to all outside doors out of reach.  Ronin to this day lets himself out of his crate. He also lets himself out doors (we had to ask the landlord permission to install deadbolts) because he will open door knobs with his teeth and slide open patio doors (he knows how to push down the little latch to unlock it and how to paw out the piece of wood we used to block the slider from opening), I have come home a couple of times to find him asleep on the couch (bad dog) after letting himself out into the screened in lanai to go to the bathroom (he has never run away).  As for chain link fences and Ronin, well he knows how to climb them, he will hook his paws through the links and climb.  He freaked the vet out when he scaled their 12 foot fence and stood on top of the top plank (laid width wise to accomodate lights in the future) just to see the deer they were keeping on the other side.  He came right down when called.  Isis figured out how to operate the door locks, door handles, and windows in our Chevy pickup, H2, Honda Pilot, and a friend's Navigator (we won't discuss the numerous scratches in each from her attemtps).  I have to keep her tied with a leash when we are stationary and I am out with the other dog.  Nothing a dog does to escape surprises me hahaha
