I just read the new TOS thread and I just had to ask this question because of another member's question.
I actually think I know the answer. And the answer is someone can own a dog, but the pedigree is part of the public domain. Or something like that? Any experts care to explain or contradict?

A pedigree is just information about a dog, I don't see how any one person can claim ownership of it. Photos of the dog, detailed information about the specific dog, etc I can see claiming ownership of.
But if we owned siblings. Can I really claim you can't use the pedigree information, because I own it? Seems silly to me. Besides which, if we are going with "the owner of the dog owns the pedigree" then wouldn't the owners of the dogs parents own that section of the pedigree? And the owners of the grandparents own that section, and ... Where does it end?

When you buy a dog your given a five generation pedigree along with your dog or you should. That pedigree is part of your dogs acestory and its belongs to you as well as everyone who owns a dog along the acestory line. Other words its a joint ownership of everyone is how I see it. The minute you enter your dog into any type of venue then its public. When a dog is ofa'd you can elect to have the information made public in the database or elct not to. Its your choice when you send in the paperwork. If you do not agree to have it put into the database its your decision. If its there then you have given it to the general puplic and have no reason to complain.

I always felt I owned my dogs pedigrees and that is why I was angry with someone for posting mine on some other dog site <pawvilliage> without my permission. I do not understand how or why of this question here though. The other time i speak of was a stalker UKC judge that bought pedigrees of dogs belonging to me from AKC which I dont see how that is legal and posted them and she has never has business dealings, judging, or permission to do anything with my dogs and she is not even a gsd person.

GSD Newbie, I am just curious why your so upset about your dogs pedigree and the information there-in. I personally would feel great if someone thought enough of my dogs pedigrees that they would take the time to download them. Ofg course there are always goingto be those who abuse it but thats part of life. I am very proud of all fo my dogs pedigrees and since I have nothing to hide in any of them I see no real harm. If someone is trying to sabotage my dogs then its probably something personal more then it is the dogs. They will speak for themselves.

Because it was done by a stalker and then she posted what she had done publically to inform me she had my personal info my home address and so on before sending me a message privalty on a forum announcing to expect a visit from someone. AKC allowed a person that had no roof over their head, who could'nt feed herself or her dogs and who was physically threatening me to buy my personal info and my pedigrees for a lousy ten dollars a copy. Besides the idiot even entered the info wrongly butchering all the titles and wins of the dogs above mine in the pedigree. Even if the site is going to offer info it should at least be correct and not make correct changes when they are informed. When someone else posts a pedigree it is not normally meant to inflict fear of personal safty for having somone's personal home info sent to you with a message of now I know where to find you and someone is coming from a phsyco that preys on people and has been in court multiple times and sued by dog people for her behaviors.
What I have shared has absolutly no issue with this forum, or I would not be here. All information here is shared and corrected to the best of the owner's ability and is not for wrong reason's and it does not share people's home addresses.
