On our way to pick up Prince from the breeder, we stopped at a book store and purchased a book for the long ride home. The book is titled..Schutzhund Theory and Training Methods....by Susan Barwig and Stewart Hilliard .Has anyone heard of this book? If so, what did you think of it?

I bought this book...Apparently, it is a good read- I have not done so, and have had the book for several years.

It is much better to get knowledge from first hand experience ie- going to trials, seminars, and frequenting training, and spectating other dogs being trained. You can learn a lot from witnessing what other people do with their dogs, who might have other issues, or training hurdles.

That book as well as "Advanced Schutzhund" by Ivan Balabanov and Karen Duet were the first books when I started my research prior tn acquiring a GSD.  I also bought the 2 dvds "Obedience without conflict" by Ivan Balabanov.

I found them helpful to better my understanding of dogs, training, the routine in schutzhund.  So when I did attend any training clubs and trials even as a spectator I was at least equip to ask more appropriate questions and not be ridicule too much with the obvious ones.  That's me anyway.

Thats a good book for reading...I also have her book titled Schutzhund... I have many books on training as my ex was obsessed with every training book he saw, he had to buy it...Now, I am glad he was like that.......I don't base any training on just one method, as I feel every method has something positive.  Just as there are things that we just don't particularly care for.....Thats seems to be what works for us....

Yes, good book to introduce you to training. A helper I worked with was good friends with Stewart Hilliard back in the day and it was cool to pick his brain on different methods.  Anyway,  I read it years ago and think I still have it somewhere... but, like I think was mentioned in other posts,  it's good for you to get input from many different sources, as that will give you a well rounded idea of what different training styles there are, as well as just good information and education on the basics.
Ivan's videos are good to view and so are some Leerburg DVD titles.  The Gottfreid Dildei/Sheila Booth book has good basic info for you to get started with as well.

Don't become wedded to one thing touted as "the best".  It's not just one book or video or seminar that is the best one. One person doesn't know everything a not every training style fits every dog or handler. I learn something from everything I read, every seminar I go to and every DVD I watch.

I got this book for christmas a while back. Good for a starter to get some ideas. Like said before, don't take it as a Sch bible. It gives you an idea. Then you move on to Helmut and ivan's books. You can also google Sch articles and find some good reads.

Steward got a big lift at the time of the formation of home land security. I had a
friend that sold him some Malinois for the government.

Be sure you get the Ivan....DVD......Obedience without conflict.

I suggest you also pick up "Der Schutzhund" by Helmut Raiser (translation by Armin Winkler).
