Ace - If the BTL arrives before the snow does here then I'll let you know how it goes. I'll even shoot a video. If I can ride a bike with a dog then there's hope for everyone.
Seriously, I didn't consider riding a bike with Senta until she had a reliable response to the "leave it" command. She's not dog aggressive but she loathes cats. We've had lots of time to practice the "leave it" command since my neighbour's cat constantly sits on our back porch and stares at Senta though the kitchen door. Same for rabbits.

I wouldn't ride with a dog who wasn't proofed off lead.
If you're using a springer or walky dog and you can't run them along the bike before they're proofed off leash then that's pretty sad. I didn't teach off leash until after mine learned to run along side the bike. Mine all knew the basics, and leave it when I taught them and that's it.... Now they can do most things off leash, but still......... And I am now teaching Little Dude who is 8 months to run along side of it as well. (We don't go too far, or up hill because of his youth) If people follow what Jim has said....which is similar to how I do it......You won't have problems. Attach a springer, or walky dog as I use, to the harness. It absorbs all jerking or pulling.....Then put a correction collar (whatever you usually use) on them, attach the leash and hold it in your hand...... I put it around the bike handle, and just correct as needed. We had little dogs run out at us barking, we passed cats (which my dogs have killed in the past...... Cats that have been in our yard at night when I let the dogs outside......and I didn't know they were there) and many other things, people, etc. Once Little Dude is old enough to go for longer distances I'll take him and the other three Huskies all together on runs. I'll even shoot video of it while I do it just to show that off leash training or not......he'll be able to do it with them, and as we pass by all of those things.

Jim.. that is a funny picture...

GSDguy, I didn't read your whole post. I just need to clarify that perhaps before you quote mine and make sarcastic comments like "that's pretty sad," (if you can't ride a bike with an unproofed dog) you should read the post you're quoting. If you had done that you'd see that I wasn't talking about using whatever the hell Jim uses and neither was Ace, which was why I said it! I maintain, holding a dog's leash in your hand while riding a bicycle is DANGEROUS if your dog is not proofed off lead, which is exactly what Ace was doing/talking about.
As I said, biking isn't something I do with my dogs, though my dogs bike w/my bf. If I felt that they would ever need a correction or were likely to pull or bolt suddenly, or even engage an aggressor, I wouldn't send them. They're proofed as well as any living being can be proofed, or they don't go.

Martina,
Thanks.
Jen,
wasn't talking about using whatever the hell Jim uses
Hey, leave my whatchamacallit out of this. But my "whatever the hell" does absorb the bolting and pulling very well. I think it was designed for that. Here is a video of the "whatever the hell whatchama callit": I also use a leash and collar in addition to the harness. It is great conditioning for those that are planning on doing the AD.
Thanks.

I bike with two dogs at once only I do it without a leash, and use sophisticated words such as 'beep beep' if they happen to veer in front of me.
Both actually are great, one on each side of me, and off we go. However, I live in the boondocks, and meet very few cars. Still, I'd like to get one of those 'whateverthehellitis's.

by Jenni78 on 28 November 2011 - 23:11
LOL. I didn't mean any offense to your whatchamacallit, Jim. I just knew there was a such a contraption but didn't remember what it was called and resented GSDguy's sarcasm about my post that he misunderstood. Just wanted to clarify that leash in hand with untrained dog at the end could be a bad mix with a bicycle and I didn't think making that warning was out of line or that it was "sad" if someone couldn't/didn't feel comfortable doing that. Far too many variables beyond your own dog out there.
Please forgive me; I meant no disrespect!
I even told my bf he should get one so he can take the dogs I haven't proofed yet, lol.
Please forgive me; I meant no disrespect!

Well! I did not see any duct tape holding Slams 'whateverthehellitis's together so I have to question if it really works!
LOL

Jenn,
No worries. I knew what you meant. Just giving you a hard time.
Kim,
Mine has duct tape on it, it is tactical green duct tape though.
