My OH did a good one a few years ago hit a tennis ball with a raquet, dog chased it and never found it. No one saw the ball again for a few week when it was found 30 foot up in the fork of a tree :):)
The dog did continue looking for a few days but eventually gave up.
It's probably still there.

I can tell you exactly what happens to a ball left in a tree. It gets devoured by the tree. Look carefully in the "V" of this tree that grows in the middle of my deck.
Someone put the ball up there, obviously to end the game, and we just discovered what became of it, only a few months ago. I'm sure that ball has been there for years. LOL

LOOOL...
I use a Kong ball...the big red one, that weighs a ton....well we also have a metal gazebo with 12 inch in diameter - 4 hollow columns over a back porch...let me tell you, if you throw it really really hard and ball does not clear the opening and hits the edge of the metal gazebo it sounds like a frigging explosion all y0u see is dogs ducking down and running out of the gazebo....1st time i did it it scared the s**t out of me...i nearly dropped to the ground myself....

I can often be found half way up a tree, or beating a tree with a big branch trying to retrieve my bad aims!!!
