mine now are 6 months older than the previous posts...so 1.5 years and 10 months...the little one is more of an alpha.....they do play well toghether no fights so far...just a bit of bickering everyonce in a while...they eat together also...If one starts to be mean to the other they get reprimanded by me..so they think I am the alpha I guess...they just know the rules. No fighting...worked so far..knock on wood.. Renz.;;how has your situation evolved?

I think its a crapshoot any way you look at it. Depending on dominance and submission personalities you could have harmony or disaster.

by IPHIS on 12 December 2005 - 19:12

You can have many dogs together males ,females and they can be getting along fine ,playing like good little dogs....you take your eye off them for awhile and total freakin chaos can errupt...bloody fights..serious fights ...what are you going to do ,,step in the middle...then you're fair game ..it can be a disaster .. if you do not have total control on the dogs by voice commands..and i mean when they are in a group then i feel they should not be together.even with you there, i feel they should never be left alone together, trouble might never happen but if it does..it could be serious and expensive, even fatal...

True, it is a crap shoot..I've heard many different opinions...the voice control thing is very important..in more ways than fighting..running into the street etc.. I think with two it might be easier than 3 or more..with more they might be more into picking sides or just joining in for the fun of it and picking on the underdog or whatever..but with two so far for me has gone pretty smoothly..they play outside by themselves all day if I'm busy inside, but I have windows all around looking out there so If I see anything I can react...also banging on the window is a good distraction ha..but so far no huge fights..

Renz if I may ask a few questions? First are you planning on breeding? If not then why not neuter them? Fights can be reduced and the chances of testicular cancer are gone and prostate cancer is reduced. Getting a female can be easier but if she isn't altered then you need to keep them apart when she's in heat unless you plan to breed and she needs to be at least two for that though she will go into heat before that. Spaying reduces chances of reproductive cancers as well. The last thing is that you need to let the breeder know exactly what you need. A male puppy that is not too dominant and gets along well with the other puppies without fighting over toys or food. If one with that personality is not available then you should wait for another litter with a puppy, male or female, that is more acceptible for your home. Also one whose personality compliments you. Can you handle a dominant dog? I can train a dominant dog but my husband cannot. He doesn't understand how they work. He also cannot have a submissive dog because he gets frustrated and will crush its spirit. The breeder will be able to match the best puppy for you if given all the information and you and your dogs will all be happier for it. You can ask the breeders here what they would recommend and I'm sure some of them would help. Just tell them about your lifestyle and see what they think. BTW Two males need to be kept seperate while you are away to prevent fights that you cannot intervine in. ~Erica~

I have my 3y/o male and a 9mnth male so far they get along, but my adult doenst seem to have an alpha bone in his body, hes just happy to play with the other dogs... lol but they will never be left alone no matter how well they get alone... I dont want to chance it. We also have an 8y/o male saint bernard. My mother just got a male puppy but before him she had an alpha male that could be lose with my adult male but they were taught they couldnt go around eachother, and they were only out together when we both could watch them carfully. You could tell my moms dog would of loved to go after my dog.

When dogs are in the "red zone" -voice commands/control don't do jack!

by rint on 18 December 2005 - 03:12

i had a friend who have 8 females dogs roaming around the same time.eat the same time and play the same time . the one rule is to show them that you are the alpha dog.

by Buddyspal on 18 December 2005 - 04:12

Right on, rint!

While this one person is able to have eight dogs of the same sex running lose, you didn't say if these were mixed breeds, or if they were high drive GSD's. I have a female GSD and a female Dutch Shepherd, while neither is aggressive towards each other while seperated by a kennel, I still won't let them loose together. It's way too much of a risk. Why not be proactive and just avoid the situation all together?
