The whole issue depends on YOUR relationship with your dogs! How THEY perceive YOU! Do they recognise your authority and do you have very good control over them in the home? If you are the 'Boss', then YOU make the rules and they listen! (I have cats in my home too, and none of my dogs would dream of 'interferring with' or chasing them). Remember Pack Leader controls the Pack. If you have 98% leadership, that leaves just a MINOR margin of 2% to share between them, which is just enough to satisfy their natural hierachy over each over WITHOUT creating any major issues. If they know that you are their Pack Leader, they will be relaxed and confident in that knowledge, and have NO NEED to assert themselves aggressively!

In our house the older male and the ounger male get along fine! Just if you do get this male make sure that he knows that the older male WILL be the Alpha... Thats how worksin at our house and all the shepherds know it...We have two males and two females... all go outside and romp and play together... The only time we have ever had a problem is when the younger male tries to "submit" and the older one... & just doesn't want anybody in his face... In our house the "ranking" is: Oldest male(2.5 yrs), Oldest Female(almost 3 yrs), Younger male(1 yr.), Younger Female(almost 4 months) Jordyn (ShepherdVet16 on GSD Board)

And i forgot to add both of the males we have together ARE Intacked....

by DKiah on 07 June 2005 - 15:06

Sorry, but this subject just makes me cringe..... first of all these dogs are "INTACT" meaning whole, not cut.... sorry of we are going to discuss these subjects we at least need to get the grammar and spelling correct.... I never did understand why people always want all their dogs to live together in harmony..... as if humans can even all get along....like a hippie commune or something. Of course, there are situations where this can occur and like someone else said BAM! one day things are different... Above everything people, we must remember these are dogs and they live and breathe like dogs... so no matter how well they all "get along", one gets older and a bit more confident or somebody looks funny and then all hell breaks loose.... and it will happen, it's just the way it works I have seen way more bitch fights than male fights, however and they mean it... I just find it more harmonious to manage the situation - don't get me wrong.... my husbands male is fine with any of the females as long as they are not in heat, so they do get shared time together. But, none of my dogs just run together and none have free run of the house at any time.... they all get to spend time in their kennel or crates and I choose their time out of their crates to be spent with me!! Just my humble opinion and allowing a dog aggressive dog with another is playing with fire.....

Just stick to the subject..not everyone can be a winner of a spelling bee..just read what they have to say and don't pick at the spelling. It's just another way to make someone feel bad and yourself feel better. Must be the alpha dog in you.

To you all - Thank you so much for the helpful information - however, I will have to read it all again and try and process it. I am the LEADER of the present dog now - he is a Certified Pet Therapy GSD - comes from a wonderful breeder and a very good temperment - but it sounds like you can be sailing along and bam - something can happen - I could never take that risk - it would break my heart to take any dog to the vet to get stiched up - or worse yet - I would blame myself till the day I died that I inflicted that upon them. So maybe I need to wait for a female. RIGHT!

Thank you so much Branddoggy, I believe I did go on to the subject after my little regression for which I apologized in advance... seems to me you are the bossy one... I'm sorry Renz, to go off topic.... I have a friend whose older male nailed his young puppy several times and him in the process trying to get the older dog off the lil guy..... you have to know your dogs and then just still be aware that situations can become volatile in the blink of an eye.. who knows what goes on in those little lemon brains of theirs... Sometimes it is what it is... and we just have to work around it... you are aware of what could happen, I'm sure you will be fine...

by Brandoggy on 08 June 2005 - 08:06

some apology....and I said stick to the subject which means don't go off picking at peoples spelling, etc... I'm not bossy, well my husband would disagree..ha, but I don't like it when people TRY and ask a question or make a comment and people pick at their spelling or grammar...we ALL know what they are trying to say, just let it go..in the end YOU will feel good about it and so will they.....Now I am off the topic, but that is one of my pet peeves... I hope the puppy situation works out...I think the age difference does make a difference so you could be fine...the puppy will come in knowing who is the alpha..so he won't need to prove himself... but there are people here who have had some bad experiences so better safe than sorry..

Dkiah - I am glad you gave me your opinion. (and I do not care if you switched subjects) I know you know dogs. I believe you are all right - I just am glad I posed the question - because it has made me think - I seem to think everyone and everything is suppose to be happy and content - but I need a slap in the face sometimes and two males maybe to much.

in total i have 11 dogs, 8 of which our shepherds, 3 males and 5 females, I also have 1 female rottweiler, 1 Female cairn, 1 male westhighland. and yet to today i have to see any of them fight. Mind you I always get them at a puppy state and let the others get use to them and grow up with them.and i have never had any problems. suppose it depends on the kennels and the trainingthat the dogs receive,
