Dogs are generally very healthy animals! If your dogs from different bloodlines suffer from the same kind of diseases, the problem is most likely external. First of all – cancer. I was involved actively with dogs, and K-9 clubs for almost 10 years in Eastern Europe, and I ONLY heard about ONE dog having cancer!!! And I never heard of a dog having allergies! Among all of the dogs in our club, and among dogs of numerous dog related acquaintances! After I moved to the US – oh my gosh! In less than several months I personally SAW 3 dogs dying from cancer! None of them were show-breeding, and one of them was a mix. DOES IT TELL YOU ANYTHING? In Eastern Europe, 99.99% of dogs fed RAW – its much cheaper this way over there). And there are NO hormones or antibiotics used in production of meat or poultry. A chicken is of the size of a chicken there. FORTUNATELY the agriculture is not highly modernized, and it is not a mass production there, and there are almost no chemicals used in production of food in private “farms” that are 1/10 of an acre in size. It concerns me in regards of people too. I have never heard of so many cases of cancer as since I moved to the US! To put it short – I try to eat organic, and feed my dogs organic as much as I can, and encourage my friends to eat organic, and no GM stuff. BEWARE, RABIES VACCINE CAUSES CANCER – it had been proven through studies! Do NOT vaccinate your dogs every year, and do NOT feed them trash food! I personally do not vaccinate my dogs against rabies until they are at least 7 month old – rabies vaccine is known to slow down development and can screw dogs’ teeth while the dog is teething. Sorry for rambling – this stuff is very upsetting for me. PS About the vets – its funny. Recently I vent to the vet with my GSD who needed to loose just a little bit of weight to be in a good show condition, and the vet said that she needs to put on some weight! Of course I said, no, she needs to LOOSE some weight! And the vet said: “Oh no, you must not be able to feel her spine bones and ribs at all! Usually female shepherd weighs about 80-90lb.” ?!?!?!?!? All I could say is “That’s because they are fat!” And go home. That is the VET? A person who is concerned with HEALTH?

I want to be clear here, this is just my opinion but I do agree that our biggest health issues stem from vaccines and processed foods. Annual vaccines may bring in money for vets but they also cause so much needless suffering for pets and their owners. How fast do you think things would change if we could sue those vets and vaccine companies for the damage they do? I'm glad people are talking about these issues. The vets will only change when they are pressured to.

GSD i agree with you.. alot! ya know there was this infomercial on FOOD network bout 4am and this guy spoke of "natural" treatments and how the FDA and Pharmaceutical Companies are in cahoots and there are MANY cures for MANY diseases but they have us thinking there are NO CURES for cancer, diabetes etc... but in fact there are!!!! ITS NATURAL means that can cure the body of terrible diseases and this man has a book he wrote with all kinds of cures and i am buying it to see how true it is. Like for instance... ya notice how in humans, cancer is only present in an "acidic" body versus alkaline? If you do a PH on a pt with cancer... you will see its PH is lower.. if they changed the pts body to alkaline.. the cancer cant live and would go away... same thing with treating heartburn... did you know if you take a TBSP of Vinegar it will help relieve heartburn?? can you imagine that?? they also say Heartburn can be cured and so can Acid Reflux and you cure it NATURAL they said in this book that the drug companies make Pepcid and Zantac to get the body to rid itself of the Acid and it does.. but it rids it of all the acid so then the stomach freaks after awhile and starts again the cycle so it gets it to produce it and then the meds remove it all... its a viscious circle. What i am getting at is there is probably something with Vaccines in there too... do we really know what is in a Vaccine? Why are there so many children with terrible diseases and its got to have something to do with some of the vaccines... because childrens bodies do not house the stress that adults too, typically what do you guys think? For every action there is a reaction. My concern with vaccines is that you are deliberately injecting a disease in the body and supposedly the body developes antibodies. In a sense we think we are tricking nature. But vaccines do not enter the body the same way germs , etc naturally do. I think vaccines short circuit our immune system and instead of getting a full blown case of something, we get chronic illnesses like allergies, cancer, etc. These are all situations were the body begins to attack itself - i.e. immune problems. Another problem with vaccines is the combination ones - it doesn't make sense to bombard the body with 6 or more diseases at one time. There are risks in not vaccinating but maybe it makes more sense to let our immune systems do their work naturally rather than trying to create artificial immunities. I also believe that many of our health problems result from our food - we eat meat and vegetables that are full of chemicals. How can it not affect us - especially growing children. As far as dogs go - the process is excelerated because their generations are quicker.

Not only do dogs (and cats) not need these combination vacs, many of these diseases are no longer epidemic, at least not in the US. Also, it's my understanding that the strain of lepto vaccinated against is not the same strain to which dogs in this country are exposed. I know it's expensive if you have a number of dogs, but for those who can afford it please do titers on your dogs annually rather than routinely vaccinate them against diseases they are likely to never be exposed to or one like kennel cough that is a nuisance disease, self-limiting and self-curing. Jean Dodd's her most current vac protocol says vacs at 2,3,4, months, a booster in 1 year and the vast majority of dogs are immune for life and require nothing more. She also says, no 2 vacs on the same day, skip a month in between. Rabies is required by law in most states. Some will accept titers, some not, so there might not be a choice where the state can confiscate an unvaccinated biting dog and kill it if there is no proof of a current rabies vac. Here in PA, they are not allowed to do that, the dog is quarantined for 10 days, but we are subject to high fines for a dog that is not vaccinated every 3 years. I'll pay the fine if Blitz ever bites anyone and I intend to do all I can to make sure he doesn't have the chance to do that indescriminately. If it's a bad guy, then I'll let him take his bite. Bottom line, I worked for 4 vets in a 15 year period, 2 of them would do anything for a buck including amateurish ear crops and other cosmetic procedures. 3 would never haved passed up the opportunity to parlay a few dollars worth of vaccines into $80, the going rate in this area for the combo vac plus rabies and a cursory physical exam. If you have a vet who has the best interests of your dogs at heart and not a trip to the Bahamas, you are very lucky indeed. Otherwise, it would behoove you to take charge of your dog's health status rather than depend on the vet to make all the decisions for you.

by sunshine on 19 November 2004 - 07:11

Very interesting. I just wonder why homeopathic vets are practically non existant in the USA. . . And I also find it interesting that no vets write on this site. Even out of curiosity. . .

sorry about the typo Does anyone know of any states that take titers for rabies?

by Kougar on 19 November 2004 - 20:11

I lost a dog earlier this year who was old german american lines mixed. She had serious auto immune problems at less than 2 years old which surfaced initially after a bordatella vaccine REQUIRED by some boarding kennel. We tested for everything, x-rays, nuclear scintigraphy - thinking it was orthopedic initially. Then started on blood work for lyme, then lupus, and finally after tons of bloodwork, no one ever could come up with anything definitive except poor auto immune system. Every time she was vaccinated with the multiple injections - DHLPP etc, she got ill afterwards. We spent alot of time in high risk areas - riding out in thousands of acres of woods - so vets vaccinated yearly for rabies - and this was not the vaccine that bothered her, but the combos and the bordatella. I could not go away and board her because I would not give it to her again. She got lymphosacoma and was let go less than 6 months from the initial lumps showing up. At less than 6 years old. My GSDs from childhood lived alot longer and were vaccinated alot less.

That's a familar story, Kougar,it mirrors my experience with my first GSD, similar bloodlines too.
