By "pampering" our pups we do good for one dog, but not that good for the breed.
I am tired of all those telling me "no running, no jumping" until after the official x-rays. We are talking about dogs, not about statues...
Slippery kiddy pools used as whelping boxes are shit, but although they are shit a lot of dogs raised in these pools do not have HD...
Concrete is not good at all, too - but a lot of pups raised in concrete kennels don't have HD...
I'd say "good genetics" ...
HD is the most common desease in our breed. Scientists from all over the world independent working from each other already found several genetic marker, but as long as the research is in progress the only things a breeder can do is to take a look at the pedigree, ancestors, siblings...
The better the family in case of health, the better the chance to get healthy puppies (no hearsay, but scientifically proofed by several scientists in different countries).

Doberman, Mini Schnauzers, corgi and GSD. a few AKC Champions and ob. title holders. Only GSD had issue with HD (or ED).
certainly, I think environmental can affect hips, but just for the record, the GSD is a breed originated for a very rough and tumble life of sheep herding, and later adapted to LE/Mil/PP. does anyone really believe original intent was dogs that had to be coddled into adults?
IMO, slick bottom surface for pups is stupid, other than that, stay as far away from HD/ED as you possibly can and accept no excuses from breeders as to how your actions caused their perfect pups to go bad.

Slick surface where they cannot get traction to nurse is the worst thing for them. My pups are standing up as young as two or three days old.....because they are not slipping and sliding around.
But believe what you want about swimming pools.

Rik: I used the kiddy pools for many years. always lined with out door carpet.
There you go, Rik. You make my point....you provide TRACTION for the developing newborns!
Again, I never said one word about " coddling"! Providing good traction for puppies does not equate to coddling for Pete's sake!

just posting my experience and common sense that slick surface cannot be good for pups. and anyone, even the most novice should be able to understand that.
do you really think you are the center of the GSD World and every post/reply that does not agree with you is directed at you? or even pays attention to you?
many people have many years experience with the GSD and issues related in all aspects.
"for Pete's sake",
Rik
and P.S. to add, the environmental, your fault as a novice buyer, sorry no replacement, no refund, because you didn't feed the puppy right, allowed the pup on stairs, raised the pup in the same household as your children, is bull crap.
99.9% of GSD HD is genetic. or maybe the 100 or so recognized breeds with no issue of HD is just good luck?

For Pete's sake, puppies don't need to be coddled t be raised properly.

Yep. Pure bull chitt, Rik. Those are the so called breeders that you should avoid, if you haven't already.
Because by the time the pup is eight weeks old, and raised on slick surface, the damage is initiated for hd.
Rik: 99.9% of GSD HD is genetic. or maybe the 100 or so recognized breeds with no issue of HD is just good luck?
No, it's not good luck, it's excellent musculature and no loose ligaments, dry ...complete opposite of the gsd showlines from USA and Germany.
Look at the racing grey hound that is devoid of developmental hd when raised as a whelp on good footing, and compare it with the neopolitan mastif that is almost 100% with hd no matter where it's raised.
Show the proof that 99.9% of gsd hd is " genetic" ....point to the " hd gene marker"....you can't because there are none. Hip development is mechanical...not a gene trigger.

I guess my response was because I didn't realize my post was anything personal to anything you had posted or even realized it was related to anything you had posted. I was just a little taken aback that you singled me out in your response.
Is that a problem for you?
