Police say the small dog had bit a jogger and they were trying to contain it, when it clamped down on an officer’s hand and would not let go.

The dog was protecting his property.  He didnt break skin.  Police were then called.

Dog was cornered on his porch by the police, tazed and bit out of fear.  They shot him in his hindquarters...to try to subdue him. Makes sense...not.

Real Men dont Shoot Chihuahuas.

If this wasnt' so pathetic it would be funny !?  Sounds like a bad comedy.  Those cops have got to be lying to cover their butts.   Any pics of the cops bite marks?
Here is 4lb Gizmo.  A taser would kill him, I'm sure.

in the dog world these guys will be labeled as fear bitters,i mean if a little dog scares you so much that you need to kill it i don't know  but a fear bitter will never become a police dog, neither should these guys.usually people who have mentality and heart to kill helpless animals usually become serial killers, but these guys became coops wow now that is scary.Idiots. have a nice one.

EK,

I'm not saying the police don't have the right to deal with a dog that is threatening someone, but the reaction has to fit the situation.  Rules are written as guidelines, but they cannot possibly be written to cover every situation, and as an "intelligent" person, the officer needs to think for himself as to what rules apply to the situation.  Sometimes the small dogs can be a bit nuts about fear issues, and can get aggressive, just like other dogs.  But a bite from a Chihuahua would not do very much damage, barely draw blood, most of the time.  And if the cop managed to get himself bit 17 times on one hand, and nine on the other...I won't comment.  If he was close enough to get bit that many times on the hand, then one wonders why they didn't throw a blanket over the dog, or a coat, and subdue it that way while they found a crate or something to put it in.

He's expected to recover?  I'm sorry to say this, but if a big, strong man can't recover from a few minor bites from a dog that weighed less than his head...then he's not much of a man.  Now if he'd sustained that many bites from a Pitt or a Rottie, or even a Golden, there might have been something to worry about, but the simple fact is that a five pound Chihuahua is not a threat to anyone, except maybe to trip someone.

And how could it have bit him that many times when the article stated that it clamped down on the cop and WOULDN"T LET GO?

Why didn't the officers call the SPCA?  Simple.  It's called EGO.  Can't let some man or woman with experience with these little dogs best the big, brave officer.  I bet I could have dealt with the dog, without having to kill it.  The officers were overwrought, and their fears and excitement fed into the dog, increasing it's reaction.

I sure hope they never come across a little kid with a squirt gun...Hard to cover your *** when you shoot a human.

Crys and the rest  I understand what you are saying and I said quote   "personal thoughts I don't think so"  referring to the need of a tazer and 3 shots.

But what gets me is these owners of any breed specially the small ones that cry fowl when little ole jack goes and bites a jogger unprovoked. This time a jogger next time a child. Granted the bites are not as aggressive as rotties or pitts but neither are cockers but the child that is missing the eye would say different or the child that has to have plastic surgery  done to fix his lip will never look at it as a "oh cute little jack" anymore.

Small dog owners need to be aware and train their dogs as much as big dogs owners and stop playing favorism cause it fits their needs.

I think the Police involved are lying -- I would want to see pictures of his hands / hospital report before I would believe his "story."

I think so too.  I can see them becoming pissed off at the little guy and just taking their frustrations out on him (laughing even).  If they really wanted to catch him they would have thrown a jacket over him, or called the dog catcher.  There was certainly no need to kill the little dude, ON THE FRONT PORCH to boot!  Sickening.  My sister lives in Ohio, I'll have to ask her if she's heard about this.

Were the cops wrong for shooting the dog... ABSOLUTELY!!!!

but!!

If you read the police report completely and the statements of the owner and his wife... you'll also find they're equally at fault for this happening.

1) The dog was left in a back yard unattended while his owner was away because "I forgot he was out there" when the guy went out of town for a trip to attend a funeral.
2)The dog had a history of "Nipping @ neighbors" and actually ran out and bit a jogger passing the house, which is why the cops were called in the first place.
3) The dog had never been vaccinated for Rabies!!

The cops were totally wrong to kill the dog. take off a jacket and throw it over him would have done the trick, or call the AC officers in the area to impound him for the bite as they're trained how to use a catch pole.  But the owners have to step up and assume 1/2 the blame.  They also chose to lie to the kids and tell the the dog "ran away" when this is in the news all over and they're bound to find out their parents lied... not a good idea.  *sigh*  Hopefully if/when they get a new dog for the kids they'll take time to vaccinate it, socialize it and make it a good member of  canine society...

It took 3 officers, a taser, and 3 Bullets to contain a 5 pound dog on it's Own porch.

Absolute Bullsh*t

I agree with you EK, that small dog owners need to step up and train and socialize their dogs.  The problem is that while you and I see our bigger dogs as dogs, too many small dog owners view them as furry little people, and therein lies the problem.  It's a dog, whether it weight one pound or two hundred pounds.  Train and socialize it, that's what they need to do.  It's that coddling that's done so much that leads to their insecurities.

Still no reason to go bananas, though.
