Here is some trivia:
The word quarantine comes from a seventeenth-century Venetian variant of the Italian quaranta giorni, meaning forty days.
The practice of quarantine, as we know it, began during the 14th century in an effort to protect coastal cities from (Black) plague epidemics. Ships arriving in Venice from infected ports were required to sit at anchor for 40 days before landing. This meant no goods (cargo) or persons were allow to disembark the ship.
Now in present day, Italy has quarantined several villages/towns due to this current "Chinese corona virus" aka Covid-19 outbreak having a skyrocketing number of cases. Austria has currently closed its border with Italy.
