Our 16 week old pup is either becoming a picky eater or we're trying to feed him too much. Our last boy was not a big eater either but grew well (83 lbs) up to 22 months, when we lost him to an unrelated illness. My husband is obsessed with his meals and I always have a half empty bowl on the table so the 2 terriers won't help themselves to his leftovers. We were feeding about 2 cups three times a day but he seemed least hungry in the morning so we opted to cut out that feeding. Now he's eating about 1 1/2 cups at lunch and will finish his evening meal but never seems to be in a hurry. He was 16 weeks on monday and weighs 44 lbs. I think he's doing fine but just wanted some input to set my husband's mind at ease. By the way, when we got him at 9 weeks he was ravenous. I think it was because he had to compete with his litter mates and now that he knows he has his own bowl he just likes to take his time. Opinions please??

I feed my pups 2 cups of food twice a day. I don't leave food down all the time, give him 20 minutes to eat and then take away the bowl and don't feed him again until the next mealtime. Most pups will skip the 3rd meal around 12-14 wks of age. If you can feel his ribs he is fine.

This sounds pretty normal to me. I always figured after sleeping all night the dogs aren't always hungry in the morning. I also think they tend to slow down w/o the competition of their littermates as you have noted.  And I also think it is beter he is not a gulper and takes his time to eat. Gulping food is one of the things they associate with dogs who bloat..

May I add to fm2410's remarks that if you can feel  BUT CANNOT SEE HIS ribs then he is fine.

Sparrow, Your pup is doing just fine with his weight.  Look at the FCI Standards:  http://www.nwk9.com/weight_height.htm

Once again NWK9 supplies great information.

I thought he was doing fine myself, just wanted some reinforcement of that. Thank you for the input it is appreciated. I think sticking to 2 cups twice a day will be fine, if he is eating all and acting hungry I will increase it.  We also boil skinless/boneless chicken breast for treats and figure that into their daily intake, more protein, less fat. I figured as long as he is growing, gaining and has a healthy coat he must be getting what he needs.

 Thanks again,

Cindi

Cindi,

It's really not possible to come up with some unilateral statement about how much to feed a puppy because there are too many environmental factors, for example the activity level of your dog, the quality of the food you use, the natural food drive of your pup, etc.

As long as your puppy is at a healthy weight then you ought to be fine.

One question though, you mentioned you boil chicken for your dog.  Any particular reason?  If you want to supplement your dog's diet with natural meat, then a raw chicken wing or back would be healthier than boiled meat.  Cooking meat destroys some of the nutrients.  Just curious.

Ditto on the boil the chicken   Raw he can eat bone and all  feed raw chicken wing and chicken neck and backs   no cook feed raw   if no eat in 30 mins throw away   only feed fresh and thawed almost all way.......raw lliver and heart in small amounts also.....fresh live at Sams Club in meat dept. , not frozen  put in little baggies, one strip of liver., one neck , thaw in morning in fridge, and feed with food every other day.......cooking depleats all nutients plus puts the residue from the pan you boil it in and if you have chlorine water y injest clorine and its residue also.....

The reason we boil chicken breast is for his obedience training. It's easier to cut it into small cubes (peanut size) and keep it in a pouch so that it's easily accessible. We're told to use very small treats if we treat at all. With puppies it's much easier to teach them with a food lure. If the boiled chicken is no good what would you suggest for this purpose?
