I have a 5 month old pup, that's cow hocked. His rear also seems to be larger than his front. Can this attribute to the cow hocked look? He jumps great, of course runs like a bunny. Will he grow into his rear and will some of the cow hocked go away with age?
Thanks for your help

I've never seen a cowhocked puppy improve much.

I had a male showline some years back that was cowhocked pretty bad at this age. He did improve with time but the bad news (for him) he was bilateral dysplastic. I placed him at 1 year in a pet home but had the opportunity to see him at 4 years of age and he did look alot better. Before I did the xrays (6-10 months) and was just concerned with his cowhocks I was told to walk him uphill to strengthen his ligaments. Going downhill for him was awful, his back legs had no strength and would wobble/cross. I never could figure how (in the woods where I walk) how I was going to go up and not ruin everything coming back down...

Do you have any pictures? That would help to describe the severity of the problem.

Sometimes pups or even grown dogs LOOK cow-hocked when standing, because they lower their bodies when stretched into a stack, but move just fine, so a picture would help show how severe the problem is.

IMEx most pups with good rear angulation looked somewhat cow-hocked at 5 mos.
Most grow out of that, too.

I'm with Shelly. This is somewhat common at 5 months. I would hang in there and wait through the growth spurt that's about to occur or is occurring and see what you have in a few months.

My was somewhat that way at 4-5 months. But this has pretty much disappeared now at 14 months. I think particularly if the pup is quite lanky this does happen.

Is the dog cowhocked meaing do his feet turn outward or does he stand close behind meaning do his hocks touch when he's standing naturally and do they "brush" when he's gaiting. A cowhocked dog with feet that turn out has little to no chance of improving IMO. A dog that stands close behind might. There is a huge difference. To see that difference, log on th GSDCA.ORG, click in the illustrated standard and try to figure out which fault your dog is displaying. Otherwise we are not comparing apple to apples here.

Watch the pup trot from behind and see if he single tracks. Their legs are out of proportion at that age and the hocks may kick in at certain stances. But from what I've read, if they single track they are not cow hocked. I'm no expert but I do read alot:)
