Can anyone help with tracking the split between working line and show line GSD? What was the time frame and what were the names? Thanks

I'm sure there are differing opinions on this, but here is a start for you! lol
The beginning of the split was somewhere in the late 60's to early 70's. Just looking back at both show and working pedigrees you can see the gradual change in who was used and who was not. I believe Canto Wienerau was the big controversy because of his poor bite work and character, but it seemed the SV wanted this look in conformation and he was used extensively by the show people.http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/141.html
The working line people in general took the other road and refused to use him.

VA2 Mutz von der Pelstierfarm was one of the dogs that was used by both sides during the split. Here are a few more that were also used by both sides:

VA1 Marko com Cellerland
there is more, and I'm sure others will fill in the gaps.... I am out of time for now.

Re:Canto Wienerau, do you know how this dog died so young? I have read he is being named responsible for passing the hemophilia gene in GSD's to all female progeny as carriers Also that there is a test to determine if a dog is a carrier? Seems like this would affect an awful lot of dogs?! Any thoughts?

thank you

So if I find Wienerau in my dogs pedigree I then have a show line dog I assume?

Not necessarily! lol
Quanto Wienerau was still used extensively by both sides at the time of the split. He had excellent work and produced it.

Okay...?? So how do I determine the line?
Is a V1 Sieger ShutzhundIII a working dog or showline?

Most males in Show have SchH3 title and many of them go V1 and local shows. It depends on the dog. If you have a pedigree or a link to it or by naming a few of the dogs in the pedigree it would be easier to tell if you have working lines or showline or a combination of the two.
