How can you tell if a line is genetic for cancer? Grandparents lived to 11 and 10 year. Parents are still living, and and no other siblings are showing any signs. This dog is just at 27 months old, The tumor they took out was on her spleen and weighed twelve pounds. Could it just be this dog? any thoughts Thanks EK

splenic cancer is one of the most common cancers found in german shepherds. I have found it is usually a precursor to another form of cancer. Please keep your eyes open and be aware for any changes in your dog e.g. breathing, appetite etc.

Was it hemangiosarcoma? That is very very young for a splenic mass. And yes, I agree is it a common problem for GSD's. But also any large breed. Working at a vet we see way too many Labradors or Goldens that end up with splenic masses in their older years.

I am so very sorry to hear of your young dog's problem with cancer. I had 10 year old who died of splenic cancer. I have always thought it came from something in her diet, even though I always had her on the best premium dry kibble out at the time. I have since switched to grain free EVO and also raw. I just don't want to take the chance again. I also would recommend that you check out this site http://b-naturals.com/default.php?cPath=44&PHPSESSID=1e863040225bb78006a5edc0c9c2657d She has all natural supplements and is very knowledgeable and friendly should you have any questions. She takes the time to formulate product suggestions for specific conditions. Give your dog a hug from me and good luck with his convalescence. Debby ebinezer052899@yahoo.com castlebrookshepherds.net

So sorry to hear about your dog, EK. Don't give up on her yet, she may very well make a full recovery. My oldest living dog, 14 1/2, was only given a year to live when he was diagnosed with a lifethreatening illness at 4 years. He never had a sick day after his surgery and he had to be PTS due to doggie dementia and not the cancer that was supposed to have killed him. Good luck........
