Was wondering good time for hips to be x-rayed. Asked my vet she says to young now because he can show good hips but turn bad when gets older or visa versa. Checked with other vet he says good time now. The reason why i ask is my male is 7 months and weighs about 80 lbs.And I'm not overfeeding. He's not fat just solid.I have him on database. I heard that was done at two years, but I am no expert. I called a backyard breeder once about pups but when I asked if parents were both OFA'd he said no the female wasn't, that they wouldn't do that until she was two years old and she was under two.

You can get a prelim now. To go OFA dog must be 24 months old and it would be a good idea to get his elbows done at same time.

Hi here in Australia they do it at 12 months, you can get it done at 4 months for an early idea, shadows in the x-rays can show that early but isn't worth anything to anyone but you. I don't know and would like to know in other countries the rules.:) Great site

you can do prelim now yes, elbows too, at 24 months you can send premilinary xrays to the OFA also. Or the German "a" stamp can be done at 12 months.

The x-rays can be submitted to the O.F.A. as early as four (4) months of age for a preliminary evaluation. Of course the older the puppy is, the more true the results. The minimum age for a final evaluation by the O.F.A. is twenty-four (24) months of age, and for the S.V. it is twelve (12) months of age. Read all about the value of preliminary x-rays at this link: http://www.offa.org/enewsnov2006.pdf Bob-O

I do all my prelims on all my dog's at 10 months old. I feel if it's any younger than that I wouldn't do it. All the prelims I've done at 10 months old come out to OFA good to excellent at 2 years of age. I honestly don't think they change at 10 months or older, unless they have been injured in anyway.
