What does your vet recommend you to give to your puppies?

by Gilbert46 on 06 April 2007 - 07:04

Go to your vet or emergency vet for a parvo test. IF the test is positive you can have them care for the pup or at least get assistance for home care assuming you have the capacity. Parvo is a virus, there is no medicine once the infection takes place and its too late for a vaccination. treatment is IV or sub cutaneous (SQ) fluids, and antibiotics for secondary infections if indicated. The primary goal for parvo is maintaining adequate hydration. Dont do this alone, find a open vet or emergency vet. Time is extremely important, don't sit around waiting.

The honest fact is the chances of survival are slim no matter how aggressive the treatment. Do your best and good luck.

Tamiflu.

Supportive treatment only. $$$ but often effective if caught early. Good luck, SS

How are the pups doing?

by Het on 07 April 2007 - 14:04

http://www.ambertech.com/ I have used this befor and it works very well. Fact the two pups that I sent to stay at the vet died...the 6 that I treated at home...the ones that were the worst..and I didn't think would make it..all lived. have had no health problems and we eating and drinking on thier own within 16 hours...no more blood in the stool or vomiting.. Once you order they will send you a link to stuff you can buy and get them on thier way to feeling better while you wait for the Parvaid to get to you. Heather

If you can get Tamiflu and give it early on, the survival rate is somewhere around 100%. Supportive measures make sense, but if I had a puppy with parvo, I'd first be thinking of Tamiflu and if I had a vet who didn't suggest it first, I'd be looking for another vet. It is and has been for a year or more, the drug of choice for parvo in dogs. At one time this drug was being hoarded in anticipation of a pandemic outbreak of bird flu in humans, but I haven't heard much about that anymore. If I were a breeder and had a litter of puppies due I'd make sure my vet is on board with writing a script for Tamiflu if needed. Unless there is now a resistant strain of parvo there is not much reason for puppies to died from parvo if diagnosed early on.
