Hmmm not sure how that happened... Does anyone know if feeding RAW to pups prevents or lessens the chance of Pano in pups and dogs? Do we know what causes Pano and how can we best prevent it from happening to our dogs?

IMO, after 27 litters, if they're gonna get Pano, they're gonna get Pano. Doesn't seem to matter what you feed. Oddly, I haven't had a pup develop that in years... Don't know why. SS

4pack, I am puzzled too. I have a pup that has been fed raw since I got her at 12 weeks. She came up with Pano just before her first heat. Really bad case had to take her to the vet. Did tests and xrays and she has pano at 10 months old. So I guess it can happen but this was my first ever in 20 some odd years of feeding raw. Gracie

Well I don't feed all RAW all the time, just wondering if there was a difference in accurance when fed. I guess not if enough still come up with it on RAW.

Here is a pretty informative article about pano. I learned from it, being new to GSD's. According to it, there are many causes and contributing factors. http://www.jersey.net/~mountaindog/berner1/lpano.htm From the article: "Pano is associated with large breed dogs and usually occurs in dogs 5 to 12 months of age, although it has been found in dogs as old as 5 years. It most commonly affects males by a ratio of 4:1. Females are most often affected around their first heat. It is possible that the condition is partially genetic since so many German Shepherd Dogs are prone to it. However, many other factors have been associated with pano: diet, viral diseases, autoimmune problems, hyperestrogen, and vascular problems. In other words, no one knows what causes it."

Jehannum- That is true and this young girl came into heat about 2 weeks after her first symptoms. She seems healthy otherwise.

I have two dogs, both fed raw, one got pano and the other did not get it. The one that did not get it had littermates that got it really bad (they were on both, kibble and raw) I think it basically depends on the dog. But i have heard that Pano can be brought on by sudden growth spurts, if this is true, i can see how raw can help with pano because dogs fed raw usually do not get those sudden growth spurts like kibble fed puppies do.
