A friend's GSD will be 15 in a few months. Have any of you had a GSD that lived this long? Other than having some arthritis in his hips and/or back, he seems to be doing very well. Thanks.

My very first GSD lived to 16 yrs, 3months. He was arthritic at that age but did very well, his heart finally gave out on him.

I actually had an old Male I rescued when he was 5 yrs. old, greatest dog !! I miss him every day of my life still. He lived to be 15 and could still jump in the truck, His mind went out on him, some days he recognized us, others he did not, I could not allow him to continue that way, when we would go outside sometimes he seemed like he would get lost. and sometimes he looked at me like " I think I know you and am supposed to come to you but I don't know" It was very sad and extremely hard to put him down given that his physical condition was still Very Good !! My vet was really torn, as was I.

My oldest GSD was 18 years. He had arthritic problems from 14 years in spring and autumn and in the meantime he was like young dog. At 15 years we surgery anal glands. Last two years of living he had problem with heart and he was on diuretics and heart medicine. Five years passed from his death and we still miss him.

My wife's sable bitch was arthritic at 15, and died at 16 when struck by a car.

My oldest was 15 years 5 months. The last 5 months he had some problems getting up and down, but once up or down was fine. He did not seem to be in pain or anything and had no other problems

amir: I did a survey on this very question a long while back. Seems like maybe a year ago. The oldest I came up with was 16 plus. Your 18 year old would seem to be the oldest mentioned on this web site. May I ask, was he a showline or workingline, or a mixture? What kind of weather do you live in? Was he given any supplements throughout his life? Finally, did you personally have him for the entirety of his life? Was he a companion or working dog, any part of his life. Info would be appreciated. Thanks.

14. I had a GSD/lab mix who lived until he was 16. I've heard of small-breed dogs living until 18 but never a large-breed until now - amazing. molly
