I thought the sire of my 3 year old male had retired several years ago but see that several kennels are still using him. I can't find his date of birth but an internet search shows that he was entered in some sort of police dog competition in Denmark back in 1999 which should make him about 10 years old. Got me to wondering if there is a recommended age for studs to retire or does it just depend on the health of the dog? Also, if anyone knows, who is currently the oldest working gsd stud?

A stud is generally considered ready to retire from reproductive use when he is ten (10) years old, due to the fact that his sperm count may become too low. However, a quick test will determine whether or not his sperm are of sufficent number and health for successful breeding, so while ten (10) years of age is a guide, it is not a hard rule within an organization such as the A.K.C.. I cannot speak for the S.V. or other organizations, but feel that there is generally some consensus about the age of ten (10) years being the point where retirement is a consideration. How long can he still work and perform well in a trial? Now to me that is a more serious question as many dogs are well past their prime at an age younger than ten (10) years. A few are still hitting hard and holding their own at this age, but most owners seem to let them enjoy their retirement from trials, and maintain the higher titles of their youth. In my opinion, it really depends on the dog himself. Bob-O

Alfred Kuhlen Norden produced a huge litter at 12 or 13. Fero was still producing at 12, as was Jago Lindenhalle. SS

triodegirl, If I am correct in the sire of your male, he won the 2001 Champion of the Kriminal Patrol Dog Championship, so you are off a couple of years. Competing and breeding are two different things. Val
