IMO I believe their is a reason and purpose for both Show and Working Lines and that both lines are equally good for their purpose. I really don't think you can combine the best of both lines for one ultimate dog. This does not excuse nor make right anyone who breeds poor quality regardless of the reason, poor nerves, health, color, conformation, drive etc. So if you have a good dog just enjoy!

I personally dont think there should be a difference in drive and wonder if there truly is. I think it comes more with the up bringing and if I ever should breed, I will breed to improve the drive while maintaining the standard for structure.

Mosemanor, There may be similarity in the prey drives of both, but the nerve and fight drive of the two lines are far more separated than upbringing will ever bridge.JMO

While I have owned mainly working lines I have been around show lines and there is a significient difference. The working lines have been higher in their drives and hardness than most show lines that I have seen. Remember though that most people do not need nor should have high drive working line dogs. A GSD with average drive is far better suited for a pet home which accounts for at least 90% of all GSD puppy purchases.

Show lines can produce hardness and many other things. Look at the Arlett kennel to name one off hand. A showline can also help lower thresholds. Add a tinge of nerve. improve structure.

My wife has had high lines for 17 years and I have working. The highline drives can start high but lose intensity. After being put away they require longer periods to refill or reload. I agree that they are the best choice for most pet homes as working pups or dogs are by nature more often higher maitenance and time consuming.

whydoyouevenbother I agree 100% as some breeders have done a much better job than others. I was at a show several years ago and noticed one handler showed I believe it was 3 dogs and two of them seemed very nice while one of them you could tell was scared to death and I was suprised it did not urinate on the floor. I always wondered why they brought this one to a show and what the plans were for it? I hate to think they would have ever breed her or sold her to someone as show quality.

My dogs have always cost me alot more than I have ever made, guess you just need to breed large numbers of litters to cover your costs and live on.
