Is one Buffalo bone a day too much?

Hi - I used to give marrow bones 1 a day but I found that they were wearing down the dogs teeth more quickly than I wanted. Other than that I don't see how they could hurt if they agree with your dog. Kelly

yes,I think that is too much. Maybe change to a knuckle bone if that is not what you are giving. I use Nylabones but my dogs go through them quickly too if I let them.

I think a couple a week is good. Or only let them have them for an hour or less then refrigerate and give again until the next day for a short time. Be careful they don't break pieces off and eat to much, they can get impacted from to much bone. I have a DDR female that can crunch up a knuckle bone (beef) to easy. I only give marrow or long bones.

Bones really are very good source of calciul and to develope the jaw muscles and to keep teeth clean. I would like to ask if all of you boil the bone before giving or give it raw?

by bcboy on 28 February 2007 - 04:02

No he just gets them raw. He is on a raw diet as well. He doesn't seem to have any side effects ie loose stool etc. He mainly just pulls the meat off and then goes for the marrow.

No, cooked bones tend to splinter. I also give buffalo bones. They are much lower in fat and cholesterol than cow bones. I am also fortunte to live near a farm that raises them organicly, which means no hormones or other chemicals. Anyone who would like to try these on their dogs can e-mail me. dlinne2150@comcast.net
