i am wondering what the best first sleeve is. my dog is 23months, but we've only been training for 7 months. we've done the tug and rag work and she is ready to move on. any suggestions?

Melba, I like my Jumas puppy sleeve. It is large, but soft, and gives the dog a mouthful. No doubt there are other puppy sleeves that are as good or better, and I myself would like to read some real-life comments. Bob-O

in our club we have about four different puppy sleeves. 2 that have no upper cuff on them, easier for younger dogs to carry, not good if your dog has a crushing grip, as they are hard for the helper to slip off. my favorite looks like it has a full bite bar, but the bite bar is very soft(like it is stuffed), easy for young dogs to get a full grip and be succesful. it does not have a sleeve cover, when it wears out you have to replace the whole lower section. we have been using it since i joined the club several years ago. it makes for a nice transition to a hard bite bar as the dogs are already use to the shape. john

Hi guys, if a dog is 23 months old and comes hard and is full on a heavy tug, we go right to a regular sleeve. We will intoduce it as a tug by throwing it around and presenting it with two arms like a tug then slip the arm in and release. We also do this with just an old sleeve cover. Depends on the dog. We have had dogs 7 or 8 months old, post cutting teeth on the hard sleeve. Frankly, most of our puppy sleeve work is done with dogs that need more tug work or lacking in natural full mouth grips (genetics). Kyle

i wanted a light puppy sleeve because she is a very petite little girl. she had not done any protection work before i got her, and i'v had her for just under 7 months. i think a big heavy sleeve at this point may intimidate her to the point where she says no way, i'm not doing that. she has a full grip on whatever it is she's biting, and if she doesn't, she'll pause for a sec. put the tug, bite pillow, etc.. so it touches the groound and shoves it as far back as she can get it. then proceeds to carry it.

All of those sleeves on that site above come from fordogtrainers.com at about half price. They have a nice selection, or dopedog.com store has great sleeves. Just compare before you buy.
