I have a 9 month old female that I bought at 3 months. She has always had a rolling pace gait and bunny hops. She also turns her left hind leg out when in motion. She often scuffs her toes.We had her ex-rayed and the Dr.s say that they seem good. What I can't figure out is why is she always sore? WHy can't she extend her hind legs without pain? Why does she sit all the time? The breeder is sure it is cowhocking. He tells me to rest her.I have rested her for six months now.Shouldn't I have seen a change by now? I respect this breeder, but I do have to say that I am so disappointed. Thanks for any help.

what are you feeding? how much amd what kind of exercise is she getting on average? what kind of a flooring do you have in the house? I assume she is in the house...

she is eating what the breeder told me,Eukanuba lamb and rice. The breeder said to start feeding adult food at 6 months,so I am.She does not eat alot. She will only eat about 4 cups a day.I walk her 4 blocks a day. Most of the rooms of the house are carpeted.Yes,she is a house dog, though she is out in the yard a lot.We stay out with her.I am never sure what is the right amount of rest.

This sounds just like the symptoms of the 3 month old puppy I was posting about the last couple of days, except that mine can extend her back legs. She also scuffs her toes slightly on the right foot. At what age did you have her X-rayed? Does she have pronounced rear angluation? 4 cups food a day sounds fine by the way.

She was x-rayed at 6 months and again at 8 months.Yes about the angulation.

I wonder if it does have anything to do with the angulation? mine also is quite pronounced, more than other puppies I have had. If your dog has HD sufficient to cause these symptoms I would think this would show up on the X-rays by that age. With pronounced angulation the leg bones are longer and maybe its more effort to lift the foot, hence the swingng outwards and scuffing toes? I don¿t know really, and it does seem worrying that she has pain on stretching the back legs, any more ideas anyone??

IMO it sounds like hip dysplasia. Especally with the pain. Or maybe hips that are really loose. I dont know if Eukanuba has glucosamine and chondriton in it but it would'nt be a bad idea to get the pup on this. And remember not all Vets take good xrays. Get a sencond opinion. I have a dog that kicked out one rear leg as a pup. At 1 year we xrayed and she has loose hips especially in the leg that kicked out.

She could have fibrotic tissue in her graccilus muscle. The leg will not extend all the way foreward and the foot goes into the centerline, making the leg appear to be throwing out at the knee. Not much you can do about that. Lorri
