Hello everyone I was just wondering about linebreeding. It was to my understanding that 2-2 linebreeding was too close. Well does that only mean for a particular dog. Or is it okay to breed siblings? The reason i ask is because Tom vom Bauhofer-Land is linebred on the C-F Farbenspiel litter (Connie-Fello) 2-2. He achieved a high SG rating and VA rating here in the US. Can anyone explain this?

Gimmee, 2-2 linebreeding (or inbreeding as it is commonly described) was a very common practice in years past. And it was occasionally much closer than this as one often saw father x daughter as well as brother x sister inbreeding a few decades ago. It is my understanding that the S.V. will not allow the registration of progeny from a linebreeding that is closer than 2-3 except in very special circumstances where permission is granted after much research. But in this case permission is granted before the fact. In the hands of a very skilled breeder, I see close inbreeding as a useful tool. In in the hands of amateurs such as myself, I see it as impending disaster. Bob-O

and usually when this is done it is done with a specific reason in mind.......not just to produce a litter. inbreeding is done to set in certain traits and like bob o says, can be a useful tool. just remember: the closer you breed, the more you cull because you will also be setting in the undesireable that comes along with it. and as bob says, not advisable for amateurs.

This from the person who would not seek prompt medical care for her puppy when it was throwing up for over two days....Because it is just a dog afterall. Planning on breeding already?

I am not planning on breeding just asking why that close inbreeing was allowed for the T litter vom Bauhofer-Land. Thanks everyone

Dear Bob-O or Ziegenfarm; Would either of you mind elaborating on what the special circumstances might be that would allow the SV to grant permission? Very interesting topic.

Bob-O you say: “in the hands of a very skilled breeder, I see close inbreeding as a useful tool. In in the hands of amateurs such as myself, I see it as impending disaster.” You're right. Inbreeding should be done by a very skilled breeder who know genetics by the back of his head. Inbreeding could have it's bads and goods. A close friend of mine has a dog who is inbred with V 23 Nilo von Adeloga and the dog ended up becoming in 9th place at the BSP in 1999! Not bad for a inbred show line. This breeding was grant a special permission by the SV.
