Of those that use these, or have used in the past, to determine best breeding times, when do you breed..at what percent? How has your success rate been? Any info appreciated. I understand progesterone is more commonly used.

I use progesterone testing in combination with vaginal smear/cytology. They compliment each other, back each other up. If I had to choose one or the other, I'd use progesterone. Vaginal cytology is also good to check for bacteria or infection, which could be treated with antibiotics prior to breeding, otherwise the female would not be breedable if she were 'dirty' or infected. molly

In my experience i have usually found the best breeding day is a couple of days later than indicated by the vaginal smear. It does help but is not exact, progesterone is better (in combination as Molly says) , but I do not have access to htis where I live so the smear is a useful guide....

So, if the smear says 90%...breed that day,2 days later, and again 2 more days later? I also do not have access to progesterone.

IMO trust the experienced stud dog to "tell you" when to breed. The smear can tell you that the female is in heat and progressing normally, and if she is dirty or infected. Otherwise, it is very difficult to pinpoint ovulation using a smear. molly

I have always gone by my male to tell me when she's ready. Even when I bred her out the owner to the stud wanted us to do both and we just waited until are male said she was ready. That's just my .02 cents
