Ok, my showline male snuck out and ripped through a chainlink kennel this morning and mounted my 11 month old working line female. She's in her first heat. I surely don't want her pregnant at this age and surely not by him. Is there something I can do to stop the possibility of pregnancy that won't hurt her future reproductive potential?

oops. I think there is an abortion pill - call your vet or better yet a repro specialist who can help you make a decision that will abort the possible pregnancy without screwing up her system for future heats/breeding.

Thanks, I'm calling my vet first thing in the morning.

Has anyone had their dog take this pill before?

I would wait another month and have her ultrasounded to determine if she is pregnant. If she is pregnant, you need to have her hospitalized and given a series of Lutalyse injections--followed by more ultrasound.

I have a good friend who had an accidental breeding with her bitch. She did give her the abortion pill and had no puppies. She later went on to have three litters of 3, 6 and 4 puppies.
I have however heard others say that there are side effects to this pill. Since I have not been in that situation yet, I havent looked into it myself. If it were my female, I would look into it and do a lot of research before giving it. But I think there is a time frame in which you must give it so you better research quickly!

Can't believe he ripped through the chainlink! Argghhh

if you wait a month and she ends up being pregnant (if you don't want to abort the litter now) then plan on letting her have the litter, chalk it up as an "oops" and reinforce your kennel fencing for the future. I would never think of aborting a litter after a month in.

She's only 11 months old. I don't want her to have any litter now that's for sure. I want to wait until she's titled, x-rayed, etc...

Sorry, this is the protocol used by the canine repro specialists at the VMTH at UV-Davis.
If you do not wish to follow this protocol, I would suggest that you let her have a litter of strictly "AKC puppies".
At least, this litter will not be mixed. It will be purebred. You know who the sire is and will be able to register the litter.
Besides, she may not become pregnant. When a breeder friend of mine recently had an "oops" breeding, there were no pups.
