Well, I had my class,, My girl did not do as good as I was hoping. She was a bit of a scaredy girl!!!! I go back Tuesday ( It has been raining in NY). I was told as a basic assessment, she would make a great SAR dog! Her temperment is a very calm quiet dog, but she sleeps in bed with me. Does that make a difference????
Dora, is the one targeted for Schutzhund "Bite Work" she is 7 months old, out of a totally different line than my girl" Sophia" (Sophia is a BEAUTY". Dora is a Go Getter!)
I have loaded my Burlap Sack with Beef bones and Hot Dogs ,trying,(hoping) to entice my dogs into MORE INTEREST. I am not going to say Uncle yet with Sophia, she is just 4 months old, but such a nice personality.
Any suggestions,,, Does keeping your dog "spoiled" have an effect on their "WORLABILITY"????

kitkat I don't get this, "I was told as a basic assessment, she would make a great SAR dog! Her temperment is a very calm quiet dog, but she sleeps in bed with me. Does that make a difference????"
SAR dogs need alot of drive too, but what does sleeping in bed with you have to do with working? Just stumped at what you might mean. Anyway, yeah, don't give up, pups go thru stages, and some don't "come out" for bitework until older. So keep your chin up. Not sure what she did or didn't do, but she is just a baby at 4 months. My dogs are spoiled to the max but seem to do OK, not no National Competitors but they can work.

That's what I'm wondering, if spoiling my dog will "actually" spoil her?? This is all new to me. My dogs have always been my pets/family (it is me and them) I don't know if dogs that live a kennel life are more apt to be more sporty than those that live in the home? I want to do right by my dogs. I want THEM to be, ALL THAT THEY CAN BE!
Since I have them, I want to do something with them. I am proud of my dogs for who they are, BUT , I also want to IMPROVE them.
I never knew the difference in working-show line. I now know I have German Show lines, so in the effert to improve/enhance who I already have, I have put a deposit down on a Rikkor Bad Boll/ Ursus Batu male (10)days old, (and a good penny).
I am going to learn the ins and outs of GREAT GERMAN SHEPHERDS! I need ALOT of HELP, and that is why I come here.
You may not always know I am out here, but beleive me, I am ,searching for the answers to my questions. I read everything every one has to say on this board. I have learned alot, but reading is not the same as doing. I AM TRYING my best, to get the best dogs I can. And ,, I want the Best for my dogs, so all advice is, "Truly and Greatly" appreciated!
My next class is this Tuesday,( I have a private trainer, until I GET IT), There is a Schutzhund club in Cazenovia NY, where I hope to connect soon. I just need to preparte myself and my dog(s), for whats to come.
ALL POSITIVE INPUT IS WELCOME!!!( if you have to give bad, I guess I have to take (the bad with the good).

It might just be my girl, but she focuses MUCH better on me if she has a certain amount of crate or kennel time away from me. If I pay her too much attention, it is like she takes our time together for granted.

I'd like to know what kind of stuff they had you do to be able to evaluate a 4 month old puppy so quickly.
I would give your dog more time.

I do not allow my potential SAr dogs in bed with me until they know the rules....I am alpha, they work for me. then and only then are they allowed in my bed. This can change if they test my status..then back in the crate/run. My current cadaver dog is 23 months old. She was sleeping in bed with me until she decided to try (the operative word) to lay on my head! Back in the run she went for a while. Now, three large shepherds in a full size bed is a bit much but they are great on a nice cool night.
Yes, sar dogs must have alot of drive and not be scardy cats. 4 months is way to young to determine if sa dog will be or not be suitable for a specific work

There are a lot of top competition dogs that don't mature until much later in life...In German Shepherds...there are some that their drives don't come around for awhile...Some top competition dogs won't arrive until they are a year old or so...so just wait and let them be puppies and play with them...with balls...rags...and the such...just have fun and time will tell...

One of my females littermates when we would bring them out as puppies did not show anything at all. Would just bark at the other dogs, this was the case until he was a few months old at least. Then, after few month hiatus, he was brought out at 15 months old and there it was! By his second time out that session he was nailing a sleeve like he had been doing it all along. When his was younger he had very little to no interest in rag or any sort of tug. So, yes sometimes it takes a while.
