Sorry I can't help myself, but did you watch the Pit Bull and the chick one???

by olskoolgsds on 22 August 2007 - 03:08

The video did a good job of promoting Pit Bulls, defending them, and painting them as the victums of the media and blood hungry people.
Much of this is true but it did leave out some of the most critical pieces of the puzzle. The video portrayed all of the Pit Bulls problems as that of abuse, neglect, mistreatment of all kinds, much like the media does with all animals that go bad.
It completely failed to mention the breeding process. Bad breeding, bad genetics being passed on through law breakers in particular that want the dogs for their aggressivness, and Mocho image.

My ex brother in law bred, raised, fought, and triained Pit Bulls for many years. He also is very familiar with Law enforcement, Prison, Narcotics distribution, and many many other illegal practices. His dogs could not be trusted. His dogs would have attacked my children when they were young. I know this as I have observed their behavior towards them when they were unable to reach them. My children needless to say were not ever exposed to this after I first hand saw the dogs reactions.
My point being that we have people on two sides of the fence. Those that love the breed and defend them to death and are ( kennel blind ) to the faults of some blood lines or individual dogs, or those that think every one of them should be destroyed and banned in every country in the world.

I try to look at it from a nuetral place. This breed of dog in itself is neither good nor bad. Poor breading, poor socialization, poor early enviorment, chaining etc contribute to bad dogs. The poor breading part is the one that most concerns me. Dan Drug dealer who wants a macho nasty vicious dog that has lost it's respect and trust of humans and continues to breed to this end will have one dangerous, possibly lethal dog that will not discriminate between the good guys and the bad guys or kids for that matter.

When I was a child my neighbor had a Pit Bull that was amazing. I remember that dog loved people, loved to play, loved to jump and could jump like nothing I had ever seen. He was a good dog, heck , he was a great dog. This was before their popularity and back yard breeders, criminal breeders, Gang banger breeders hit the scene.

Like everything else that comes on this board it seems like there is always two camps with no one objectivly looking at the big picture. Years ago I did a fair amout of work with Pit Bulls, with good results. Today I would be real reluctant as I would not have access to pedigrees or what the pedigree meant, or what the parents siblings etc. were like. Too much risk for me. If someone takes the time to have good breeding practices and it is evident by looking at parents and pedigree and thourough evaluation of the dog then maybe, but not as it is now.
In the end it appeared to me this video was doing a hard sell on Pit Bulls with out looking at ALL the facts. If any one denies their are dangerous, geneticly unsound Pit's out their just go to your nearest hood. JMO

At the risk of being labelled "narrow minded" - would someone please explain to me the merits of a breed of dog that was developed to fight, maim, and kill other dogs in a "pit"?

Pardon me for my ignorance, and I recognize that there are some very nice Pit Bulls out there that can pose with a child for a PR campaign.  However, this topic seems a bit out of context for this discussion board, which is focused on a breed that was developed by its founder to be of service to mankind as a utilitarian dog.

Let me be clear that I love working dogs, whatever coat they may wear.  What I have seen through my eyes, however, is that there are two breeds of dog favored in the "hood" - Pit Bulls and Rottweilers.  This is not media hype - this is my own observations from having to drive to work daily through the drug and crime infested neighborhoods of my home town, as unfortunately my home and my office were separated by an area affectionately referred to as "The Deadly Crescent".

I clearly remember meeting with my homeowners insurance agent when I moved to my new state, when I had to disclose what breed of dog that I owned in order to get coverage.  When I asked her what were the "prohibited" breeds she rattled off her list... "Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Akitas, Dobermans, ..." I waited tensely to hear the name "German Shepherd Dog" come from her lips, and fortunately the breed was not mentioned.  I am a terrible liar and I would have a difficult time lying and saying that my dog was a "mutt" or other breed.

I am opposed to BSL only because I do not want my breed of choice lumped in with the "others" - the only breeds for which I have seen advertisements such as "3300 psi bite power!" or the even less intelligent "we got da big head!"  I have yet to see an ad for a GSD with such distasteful monikers.

Flame me as you please if you feel better for it.  I speak from my own experience alone.  I do not dispute the fact that there are some good working Pit Bulls out there.

I am was so glad to hear that "ONLY" nine children a year are killed in dog attacks.  Makes me feel all cozy to know that.

SchHbabe,  I asked the same thing in that other thread and never got an answer.

Gard

although I respect your opinion, I do not respect that film.  If we are so eager to see bad publicity, why is it that the media has not shown us all of the footage of Labs, Gsd, malinois, dobies etc. doing the same things that Pit bulls are doing?  Simple, the footage isn't out there.  If I make a video of terrorists holding babies, does that mean that there is no track record?

I don't want to get down on the breed.  There are enough people out there to do that, but the last thing I am going to buy my kids for Christmas will be a Pitbull.

I think half the problem with pitbulls are the ignorant people.  Our secretary just bought one.  I asked why.  She said, "they look cool".  There are a lot of people that own these dogs that have no business owning them.  On this messageboard, I hear most of the people say that they won't let inexperienced people own their puppies.  I think alot of these pit breeders don't give a crap who buys their dogs.  Can you imagine if good working GSD lines were being sold in the paper for $100-$300 everyday.  I think the GSD would become more prvelant in the media for wrong doings.

We did a search for pits and I have to say there are some classy breeders out there.  Why didn't I think of the kennel name, Killer Pits? Or bad Ass pits?  Or maybe, and I like this one, Lockjaw Kennel.

I wonder if Vick is having a going away sale.  Maybe I can get one of those adorable, cuddly, sweet angels he has at his house.
