My 5 year old female has reoccurring hotspots that are pretty much isoloated to the same area each time. I treat them with Genesis spay and they clear up...but they do keep coming back.
She does have inhalent allergies and receives a weekly injection. I suspect the allergies have something to do with this perpetual problem?!?! Any other ideas on why this is happening? She's going back to her dermatologist next month for a follow up so I'll definitely be asking her as well.
In the interim, she has to wear her "Bite Not" collar when I'm at work so she can't get to the area and aggravate it even more .

Hi! I've been thinking about youl
I think shs gets a lot of hot spots becasue of her allergies. My allergic GSD had them all the time too, especially bad in the summer when he was swimming. How is she doing otherwise?

Crazee-
i had a GSD that had constant hotspots (year round). he too, had inhalant allergies. for 11 years i dealt with recurring hotspots(seemed like i would get one under control and boom...another !) . good luck, i hope the injections work for your girl...

Hey, Blitzen!
Good to hear from you! She seems to be doing ok otherwise (some ups and downs but hopefully we're getting there). She had been doing so well without her collar on since the beginning of July. Silly me! I should have known better. My husband told me last night that he was through with GSD's because of all of the trouble we've had with her. Blah blah blah! He'll forget about that comment in a day or two anyway. LOL.
I hope all is well with you.

I can understand the hesitation to have another GSD after you have one that has allergies, etc.. Overall this doesn't seem to be the healthiest breed in the world. I thought my first would be my last, but when he died I missed the breed so much that we bought Blitz soon thereafter. He's almost 6 and has never seen a vet for being sick, has a a few minor things like diarrhea and gets an interdigital cyst now and then that I treat myself. He even has normal hips!! There is hope .

Sounds like allgeries here are some products that really make a diffference with hot spots and allergy type problems. I got this from a friend of mine who is a professional groomer in Flordia and she recommends these with high marks especially as the depro medrol (steriods)is harmful to a dog with long term use. Shampoo your dog in ChlorhexiDerm (2% Chlorhexidine) Leave it on for five to 10 minutes. This is sold at your vets made by a company called DVM Pharmaceutical and give her a tablet of Duralactin Canine made by VPL (Veterinay products laboratories) also sold at your vets office the Duralactin is a medication for immuno-nurritional aid in the management of chronic inflammatory condtions in dogs (allgeries) this along with of course Front-line Plus every month should really straighten the problems out if not stop it all together. She told me she has seen dogs that are almost near being put down with chronic hot spots and hair loss ( toy breeds) over most of their body come back in a few weeks with the use of these medications above. You do not need a prescription for them as well I think you can possibly order on line by looking up the companies who make these products.

blitzen--knock on wood three times quick..lol
ok, i noticed my boy starting to get hot-spot , the last time i gave him a bath-all i had on hand to put on it was baby cradle cap treatment (its kinda like a oil/lotion/moisturizer), i figured if it was safe for baby, would be ok for dog right? well it seems to work great! hot spots have been gone since...or atleast under control

sorry you have had so many problems,,,with skin and allergies....I have changed to totally raw meat, veggies, and vit c natural, oils and watched the hot spots disappear....yougurt and fresh yard eggs and not nitrates in treats...it works and wish you had done that years ago...and not gotten into the shots...
Birdy posted a thread on what is wrong with the dog food in our country and if you do some research on Hips and feeding , you may want to get another gsd and do something a little bit different...
