Finally! lol it has been an exhausting last 3 days, she fooled me every night. She started up again lastnight and kept me up all night but finally delivered at 8:58 this morning. She had 3 within the first 45 minutes then the rest were spaced about 1-1 1/12 hours apart. Lost pup #4, solid black male and pup #9 a solid black female. She had a total of 10!!! I was in no way expecting that! They are very small but extremely healthy. There are 4 males and 4 females surviving, 4 black and 4 black and tan. Whew, so much for limited tie ups, didnt work in reducing the number like I thought lol

I will be picking up pppy formula and supplementing tomorrow altho she does have plenty of milk. She gets a big bowl of Chicken and rice for dinner tonight :)
1 thing tho, I am going to have to get some oxytocin tomorrow from the vet, of the 10 pups, she only delivered 3 placenta's :( I will take her and the pups to the vet saturday :)

Therese,

Congrats on your babies!

I bet the other placentas came out as usually if a puppy is born and the placenta dosen't come the next puppy will push it out and momma usually slurps it up before you realize it has come out!

NOW, THE REAL WORK BEGINS!

That is so true vickie, and I anticipated that with each birth but I did not leave her side for a second today, She chewed the cord off of each pup as soon as she could get to it, before the pup was even fully out! I had to resusitate 4 of them, they were full of fluid and were slow to breathe. those were the ones that the water broke inside of her before the pup was born, pup took another 15 minutes or so to be born and the bags were tight to the face, no liquid at all. In all the birthing I have done, I have never seen one go like this lol. To tell the truth, I am suprised as many survived as what did due to the water breakage issue.

She is enjoying a nice warm bowl of chicken and rice right now :)

Well she just delivered another, it was deceased and already stiff, very large.

Anyone have any idea what might have caused these problems? Extended whelping times maybe?

Shandra, why do you feel you need to supplement the babies if Mom has plenty of milk??? They all need to nurse on her especially within this first 24 hours and if she has plenty, there is no reason to do that.....

I have never supplemented a litter ever in over 20 years. When they are about 3-4  weeks, I start them on chicken wings.....But now is when they need to be with their mom and bond with her.. weigh  them each day and make sure they are all gaining, pay special attention to the ones who gain less and let nature do her thing..

I'd bring mom in for a her oxy shot tomorrow and a quick look see but those babies need to stay home in their warming box.. she will be fine and so will they... nothing is more upsetting to a mother and a vet hospital is the very LAST place I want my neonates!!

Not trying to tell you how to do it but 20+ years of  experience does have its benefits!!

One more thing, if she did get a lot of afterbirth.. careful on loading her up with too much food.. it will all catch up with her and can sometimes just make them ill.......... she will have enough for them.... feed her 4 or 5 small meals, easier to digest that way!!

Good luck!

ty for the info :) I will get her the oxy shot tomorrow. I dont particularly want the pups in a vet office anyways, mom neither for that matter if I had my way about it.

Congrats Shandra! One thing too if she ate alot of placentas she might get diarhea,

by jettasmom on 17 August 2007 - 00:08

My female had 11 pups and lost one but she fed all the babies herself. As they got bigger I rotated them. Never had to do any supplementing.

Good luck with the litter.
