Shepherd Woman

by Shepherd Woman on 13 August 2007 - 21:08

I am so excited today.  My black and tan shepherd, Princess went to the vet today to get her vacs for the year.  I haven't had to take her into the vet since last year this time.  Last year, she was 99 lbs.  Now I know you are going to say that it's too heavy for a girl, but you really couldn't tell that she was that heavy.  She is very long, and looked lean to us.  She has a HUGE chest also.  Since we have had Chaos for the last year, she plays more outside etc. and we no longer free feed the dogs.  They get 2 cups in the morning, and 2 at night for dinner.  We do not feed them scraps any longer etc.  When I put her on the scale today at the vet she is now 82.6 lbssssss.  WOOHOOO.  I cannot believe that she lost 17 lbs. over the last year.  The vet said she looks totally awesome and that is right where she needs to be.  She does have slight HD, so I think that the weight loss is really going to help with that.  She has never shown any signs of being in pain so that is good too.  Just wanted to share our great news.

Congrats Shepherd Woman, good job!  My Aunt has an 8 year old GSD with HD and she has had to get her weight down also.  I think she's still too heavy but you have an elderly woman and an elderly GSD who not only gets too many treats but not enough excercise. What are you to do? She lives in another state so I visit occasionally but not enough to really help.

good for you and princess and give chaos an extra hug; a playmate always help burn those calories! i know how important the weight issue is cuz my gsd has mild hd too. very important to watch their food.  congrats to you.

Congrats SW.  Haven't seen you around lately.  You sure Princess didn't lose the weight just from shedding???  I think Denny lost about 10 lbs of hair in my living room!

Great JOB!!!!!!! it is not easy getting them down in weight some times, so you really need to pat yourself on the back!!!

Sparrow. Have you Aunt substitute a cup of canned green beans(or fresh if she's up to it) for a cup of food. The dog will lose weight but wont be starving.

I did the canned green beans to get my older bitch to loose 7 pounds.

She would get a cup of Eukanuba and one can of green beans.  Loved it, and it took her about 6 months to loose the weight.

I still give them the green beans as they like them alot.  Will get them at the can can sale at our local Shoprite.

Thanks everyone.  It may sound weird, but I had not idea she was even losing the weight!  I only cut down on her food, and stopped giving table scraps, and she plays more with Chaos than the other 2 dogs.  I was very excited when I saw that scale though : -}  Thanks again for the comments.
