It is 3:15 in the morning, and I have just come back from a veerrrry long 11 hour drive to visit my mom in Quebec. A tractor trailer overturned near Coburg, and it took me forever to get home.
I took Star with me, but left Ranger with a friend, as he and her elderly Springer just do not get along. Yeah, it's a guy thing. Josh was just fine with Star, though he made sure she knew her place.
Anyway, I have a 3 dog household for a week, as I dog sit the foxhound who belongs to the couple who sat Ranger for me. When a dog woke me up at 3 in the morning, barking, I assumed it was her. I let her out. I let Star out for good measure. I put them back in their crates. Then I went back to bed.
Ranger wasn't having any of it. He came and pawed me. When I tried to ignore him, he barked. Now, Ranger is my Hearing Ear dog, so I knew something had to be wrong. He led me out into the hallway, and milled back and forth. Then, I heard this chirp from the dining room, which, without my hearing aids, I previously thought had been Hanna, my friend's dog. It wasn't. It was the smoke alarm telling me the battery was gone.
Good boy, Ranger! It's great to know you're doing your job!
NOW, can I go BACK TO SLEEP??

If that pitch is as high to Us, what do you think that little shriek is to them? It was probably annoying the hell out of him!

LOL! No doubt!!
As a post-script to this, I just got off the phone with the vet's. Ranger has a very enlarged prostate and is going for an ultrasound and needle biopsy tomorrow. He may have cancer. Please think good thoughts/prayers for us. He means a hell of a lot to me....
And he's one handsome dude!

Health check? Never heard that term before in regards to a dog. No, he's my hearing ear dog. I have a severe hearing loss, and don't hear very much once I take my hearing aids off for the night, so I have trained him to alert me to things I might otherwise miss (smoke alarm, timer, alarm clock, door, etc.)
