When looking to purchase a puppy or adult dog, what attracts you? What do you look for? Here are some things I would like comments on please. Fancy website? No website Pedigree? Large vs small breeder? Hobby breeder? Pictures? Support of the breeder for as long as you own the dog? Quality of parents? Titles? Other working dog parents {for puppies} such as police ,SAR,PPD etc? vs Sch. which could be absent. Price? Integrity of breeder? are they a mud slinger here on the database? References? What have the parents produced? Conformation? Hip ratings? Stuff like that. Thanks :}

For a schutzhund prospect and ASSUMING  AN  EXCELLENT REPUTATION OF THE BREEDER:

1.(a) (Working lines, preferably West German) Titled parents and breeders who actually train and title their dogs.  You cannot actually know  about your dogs' drives, nerves and tempraments, without working them.  I want to see the drives of the parents (or be able to count  on respected, reliable opinions of others).

1 (b) Temperament of the parents--I want to see rock solid nerves and a stablie, confident temperament with no shyness or dog aggression

2. Health clearances on parents AND INFORMATION ON WHAT THEY HAVE PRODUCED, if any.

3. Review of trial results to see if the puppies they are churning out are being worked by anyone else, anywhere. ( Kinda hard to legitimately and creditably say you produce dogs for schutzhund, SAR, police work, etc.  if NOBODY is working them there, huh?)

4.Hip and health guarantees.

If the breeder(s) is a person who constantly slams other --RIVAL --breeders and/or studs on this or other boards,  I must assume they hae some insecurity about their own breeding program.

WooHoo Mystere!! Can't do better than that!! Only exception would be.. show lines can do it too! Depends on who the breeder might be. Lets say Kirschental!

I usually check out the females as a good breeders places alot of vaule in the bitches while lots of breedershave a good male but less than desirable brood bitches.

1)the pup/dog, what is it like, good drive, nerves, social, etc.

2) the parents, how they work ,what they are like, structure, conformation, do they pass it on

3)pedigree, there is always something to say about genetics

Good Topic !!

When considering purchasing.... which we have a pup on "Hold" with a wonderful breeder.

I much preffer to buy from a small kennel or hobby breeder...

Support of the Breeder for the life of the dog is a must for me....

Sire & Dam Temperaments must be solid....

would love to see Siblings from prev. breeding....

Pedigree,  ie. Hips, Health, Temperament....

History with previous purchasers / refferences,  and the breeders Vet's opinion on the breeder.

Breeders Integrity,  for me this means I want this breeder to be honest with me,  If the breeder thinks the dog will be what I have said I want, expect, desire from this pup then great I want them to tell me that,  If they think this is NOT gonna be the right dog,  I damn sure want to know about it before I take it home and fall in love.  Not every pup is predictable and an Honest breeder will tell you that,  But I do tend to put my ABSOLUTE trust into that breeders hands to point me at the RIGHT pup in the litter for what I have said I want....

Thank You gsdlvr2,  I think you brought a excellent topic to the table !!    :-)
