Is level 1 HD (on a scale of 1=mild to 4=severe) in a dog that's not used for work or sport manageable with diet (ie keeping the dog's weight down) and proper exercise? ...or does it always get worse with age? (Of course this dog would not be bred.) Thanks for any info...

Hi,
I think that how HD progresses is very individual to the dog. Some dogs will go their whole lives and never show signs of HD even though they don't pass an "a"stamp or OFA. Keeping his/her weight down, proper exersize, and supplements can help greatly. Good Luck!

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise for HD, because it doesn't put weight on the joints. The dogs I have had with HD, didn't show problems until they were 10ish. Good Luck.

i too have a gsd w/hd (so far very mild) and i watch his diet very carefully as he is a big boy (~85 lbs at 14 mos). he is exercised daily and i'm starting to swim him too. i have him on glucosamine/chondrotin also. i'm going to look into HA instead of glucosamine/chondrotin. its supposed to be very good for the joints. if anyone has heard anything, please post it. there is a website : purity products.com they are the only ones i've heard of w/this particular formula. the others i've seen say they are HA or contain it, but the ingredients seem different. anyway, good luck and just keep an extra eye on your dog.
