Being pretty new to the board I have a question:

Do any of you compete in Obedience? I just put a CD on my Kati and am working on her CDX

I also started Duke in Obedience showclass.

It seems to me most members here train in Schutzhund?

Do the 2 not go together, I thought you needed obedience in a schutzhund trial?

Please enlighten me

Yes, obedience is one of the three phases of schutzhund. But schutzhund obedience is different in style from AKC obedience. Most people here do not show in AKC obedience.

Thanks CrashKerry for your answer. Whats the reason most people do show in obedience? I do AKC, UKC and ASCA?

I used to compete in AKC obedience and then went to agility but my dream was to be involved in Schutzhund and so that's what I do now. Besides the obvious differences in exercises and the way they are evaluated, I find the 2 to be very similar.. in both areas I train for accuracy and attitude.

When I first started Schutzhund obedience, I felt quite sloppy but once I realized it was very close to the same thing, I also started training with someone who is very detail oriented, so i am very comfortable again and don't feel sloppy anymore.

Obedience is the thread that ties the 3 phases together, if you don't have it, you don't have anything........ it's really the same in any sport..... you need control and a relationship with your dog to participate in any dog sport.. I believe obedience is a good part of building the relationship.

Hope this helps

I started in AKC OB, I trained and titled my female to CDX, RN without any formal training.  But like Denise SchH was what I really wanted to do.  Even when I started SchH with my new dog, I still titled in AKC OB until I was ready to trial in SchH for the performence practice and becuase it was a comfortable venue for me.  Also because until the UD both sports OB parallels eachother very much (Both have heeling, retrieves and stays) the hardest part of the transition was getting used to memorizing the heeling pattern without someone telling me when to turn, I also had to learn to get my hand off my stomach, lol.  I actually think SchH OB is a little easier, only because it's harder to fail.  You can't get NQ'd for any one mistake, its only point deductions.  So you can totally screw up something and still pass if you do good with the rest of the routine.  I even got a BH on my female without much extra work, all she needed to learn was the "in motion excersises".

SchH has 3 phases, Tracking-OB-Protection.  But you can just get an OB title...(OB1, OB2, OB3) But unlike AKC OB you just need to trial once to get your title.

The OB1 phase involves Off leash heeling (w/gunshots), Sit in motion, Down in motion w/ recall, Retrive on Flat, Retrieve over hurdle, retrieve over a-frame, go-out and long down (about 5-7 min...or how long it takes someone else to go through the OB routine)

Here's an OB 3 video (not perfect but pretty good), The only difference between that and OB1 is there's a running stand w/ recall, a running down w/ recall and a bigger dumbell:

Schutzhund is part of the requirement you need to pass prior to breeding. At least those that follow the standard acheive schutzhund titles, as well as some otherrequirements, prior to breeding their dogs.  It's and indication of physical and mental condition and stabiity.  Nothing says you can't do both.  You may need to teach a seperate command for the schutzhund style of heeling as it's a bit more forward and more focused.  And yes a dog can learn both the heel command and the fuss command.

Good luck with your dogs.

One of my females has a UD, and the other has a SchH1 and a CD, hopefully a CDX by the end of the year. Good obedience is good obedience, I train the same way for both and theres no reason you cant do both if thats what you want to do. No need for multiple commands in my opinion.  If you want to score well in AKC, they like to see a happy focused dog also.
