I have a bitch who just gave birth to 5 puppies two days ago. My problem is that my bitch doesn't like to eat her dry dog food. She will only readily accept egg and milk with honey. Is this normal at this time? If it's not any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Tnx

well if you give her egg with honey of course she'll prefer that over the dry dog food. She should be eating puppy food - higher calories and protein. You should never give her milk - adult dogs do not digest milk well and this could give her diarrhea, which would be dangerous for her and the puppies. Mix the egg in with her dry dog food, or some canned in with it - make the dry food more tasty for her.

I have already done that but she cannot even finish one cup dog mixed with one cup ground beef, pork or ox tripe.

Hiya
wouldnt worry too much at this stage right now she is resting and gaining her strength, if she was eating well before she whelped then she will go back to eating soon, suggest putting her on puppy food too, as that is very high in protein and will give her a boost, some bitches that I have whelped have gone off their food for up to 48 hours if not longer and they didnt leave the pups either at that time I mixed whelpie in with there puppy food and that helped or goats milk
did she eat all her afterbirth or did you take it away? bitches that eat all the afterbirth normally dont eat for awhile as the after birth is very rich and nutritous for them and that has probably filed her up too
in our opinion your bitch is acting normally by friday she would probably be back to eating fine.

Yes she ate all of it. That's what I'm thinking also. Well I just hope we're both right. It worries me the dam is not having a good appetite. But she looks fine and healthy not a sign og illness. Tnx for your inputs I highly appreciate it.

My bitches always eat after they whelp, ravenously! And they always eat the afterbirths. Check her temp. Its not good she is not eatting. Be very careful and dont wait too long.
