what would you do with a dog that bites the sleeve to take it away and goes back after you or uses it as a launching pad to bite your shoulder. he does not want the sleeve, he wants the person wearing it. hes not nasty about it, this dog rarely every barks, he doesnt growl or anything, no ears back nothing. just wants to bite you. any suggestions?? the only drive he has is he will do anything to be with me. no ball, no food no tug. he is 1/2 czech, 1/2 slovac. i am 1 of 2 people who can handle this dog.

get a new dog, schutzhund is hard enough with a dog that bites good.

The pedigree puts this dog in the high aggression catagory.  It is perfectly normal, and wanted in my opinion, to have a dog say "screw the sleeve, wheres the man at."  Although I like it, its not the best for a SchH dog as you usually want a dog that is more calm and controllable throughout protection work.  The key to working this dog into carrying the sleeve is to find an experienced helper.  This is a fairly easy thing to train out of usually and a good helper should have multiple suggestions to fix this.

I wish I could help more, but without seeing the dog and being able to read his thoughts its tough to give proper advice.  Also giving helper advice without teaching in person how to do it could cause you to teach your dog some terrible mistakes that could cost you training and points on the field.

i wasnt necessarily speaking about schutzhund. i am in one of the club deprived parts of the country. would you try a hidden sleeve? his conformation is nearly flawless, hes good inside, awsome with my kids. wont leave him with the cats because he gives them that "look". i just want to do something with him. hes not nasty with people, he is very aloof. hes 3 years old. he would bit for real if pushed and has. but wouldnt you bite a drunk idiot teasing you? lol. he doesnt put up with stupidiy.

I would try teasing him up with the sleeve until that is all he wants. If that doesn't work go back a step and work with the tug.

by DOUGLIFE on 01 July 2007 - 14:07

No do not try a hiddensleeve!  If you and/or your helper do not have the experience and know how to work on the above issue I am sure that you don't know anything about hiddensleeve work.  Being a helper is soooo much more than putting on a training aid(sleeve) and getting bit!

If you are just doing the protection work for fun, maybe try something like tug work or frisbee.  Take the dog biting man out of the equation.  There are many things you can do to have fun with your dog that doesn't have such a high probability of either ruining the dog or having someone get bit.

i would never get rid of this dog. he would do absolutely anything for me. this is one of the very few dogs who i could actually say he would defend me with his life. my other dog is all bark and loves the sleeve, but is hesitant if there is no sleeve.

we could tease all day long and he just looks at you like "yeah right". if he thinks what we are doing is pointless he has no interest. if it is real he comes unglued.

he is a thinker. he can open any door. i have to be careful not to open the fridge in front of him, because before long he will figure that out too.

his father is faro policia, dont know if that makes a difference

the hidden sleeve idea was with the idea that he may just not ever be a sport dog. and that is ok with me. i would much rather him bite the real bad guy then be focused on equipment. i have seen and worked with far too many sleeve happy dogs who wouldnt know what to do in a real situation. real bad guys dont wear sleeves
