My female Dana is spending some time over at the ex again because she is due to be in season soon. My ex called this morning to tell me one of the neighborhood mutts looking similar to Bull's Eye the Target dog (white with a black patch over one eye) manage to dig under his fence. When he looked out his back window he saw Dana, his neutered male and the target dog all playing together. According to the ex Dana started spotting on the 22nd of this month. Just want to make sure my calculations are correct that the Target dog didn't have a chance to hit a bull's eye.

When my rescue, Tasha, came into season for the first time, and I had to go away for the weekend, she went into the vet's to be boarded. I was not taking any chances my idiot room mate would put her out in the backyard unsupervised, and have an unwelcome visitor manage to get through the fence. I would have had her spayed prior to her first heat, but the vet said there was no way of telling if she hadn't already been done.

I've even heard of bitches being impregnated through a chain link fence. Makes me wince to think about, but where there's a will there's a way! Have also heard of male dogs breaking out of their kennels, and chewing/scratching their way through closed doors to get to a bitch in season.

Good luck... I'lll let the experienced breeders answer your question!

The biggest concern for me would be the chances of things like Brucellosis, Aids, and other Sexually transmitted diseases possibly being transfered to your bitch.  If your not planning to breed her safe thing,  is to spay as soon as she is out of season,  If you are planning to breed her,  Oh boy you may have a situation on your hands...  Even if you "THINK" she was not covered by this dog,  BEFORE you breed her intentionally to anything,  You better get a Brucellosis Test first.  Good Luck,  Lets hope you dodged a bullet.

My ex said he had just come in the house 10 minutes earlier so the mutt wasn't out there very long. But guess it doesn't take very long. I was going to have her spayed before she came into season again but she started spotting 3 weeks ealier than expected. (Didn't think she was due again until the second week of July.)

i guess that you would have to see how those dogs were all acting together to know if it was a good time for a bulls eye.  ie: bitch being a slut puppy and standing for everyone!  obviously she might or is getting close if that dog had the desire to dig under the fence!  did you ex see a tie or an attempted tie?  and also how long were they unsupervised in the yard?  would be things that i'd want to know!

and yes the brucellosis test is a good idea

At 8 days the chances are pretty slim that your female was bred.  Specially if she has not bred before, as a new bitch usually has to be helped as the first penetration is painful and unknown.  I don't think you have to worry to much, but it is always a possiblity!  At 22 days you should be able to get a pregnancy test.  If the bull terrier tied with your female your ex should have known it cause she probably would have let out a big yelp and then they would have be stuck together for 10-20 mins...  He should have caught it unless he wasn't around.

Also the bull terrier would probably not know what he was doing if he hasn't bred before, think of two kids exploring.  They usually don't get it right on the first try!!

Testing any female is a must prior to breeding.  If this female is going to be a breeding make sure like Echomeadows mentioned get her tested for everything!

I would check with you vet and get a test done if you think there is any chance of a tie!

although i do think that 8 days is still pretty early too.  ;)

DougLife,  Try telling the 10,000.00 year old virgin bitches that get bred every year that they are "supposed" to be helped,  sorry had to chuckle at that one.    :-)

Not to throw a wet blanket on the previous comments, however....you do not know for certain when your female is at optimum breeding. There are females that are in "standing heat " at 3 days into cycle. Then there are others that are at optimum breeding at day 19. You just don't know. This isn't as unlikely as some would have you believe. Not to mention not all males tie for 30 minutes or more. I have known males who tie for 5 and have produced large litters. That is why it is always so important to make sure your female is supervised from the first day she goes into heat.

True Deeswolf.

Which would explain my paranoid tendencies with my girl!  I don't take any chances!  One of them, ie: the intact male or the intact female comes with me to work.  Figure they can't tie with 35 miles of distance between them!

And still, I go through, OMG did I not catch it early enough.  blah, blah, blah.  Even though, in my brain, I know that she didn't!
