Hi, I'm new to this boards, however, I've been researching GSD's for several months (grats for the info, you guys are awesome). I'm looking for a companion dog (family dog), which I may like to do shutzhund in the future. I've been researching about GSD types, and I was wondering, which is the best type of shepherd  for a family, starting out as a GSD family? Is it Czech or West German lines?  I have a 15 yr old teenage boy, and two cats, so which type socializes better? I've owned hunting dogs in the past (which weren't used for hunting). I welcome your opinions.

Thanks

I agree with blueshep, but I would also go on the show line sjde. Just make sure that it has good drive, since you may want to title the dog down the road.

I not an expert but i've heard that czech line can have insane drives and west german work lines also have alot of drive, maybe  DDR or showlines is the way to go for you, since you looking for a companion/pet yet they still can do schutzhund with them. They tend to be more content being house pets. I personally would perfer the work line over the showline. It depend mostly on how serious you want to do sports with your GSD, if sports are for you the go with the West German worklines. I would think they would all be able to be socialized.

That's what I was thinking also, however, I always hear about how great the czech type is too. I've been doing so much research on each types, that I can't really make an informed decision (they both have great qualities) . This is why I ask.

noob,  If you have done your homework,  You likely have some breeders/kennel's in mind,  Go visit each of them maybe 2 or 3 of both lines, then make your decision of which lines you feel would be more correct for your individual needs.  Don't be affraid to ask those breeders to spend some time with you,  If they're not willing to give you the time you need,  it may not be the right breeder for you.  Hope that helps some.

temperament is somewhat inherited, look at the parents and their drives.  Czech vs. DDR vs. West G. is somewhat a misnomer.  We are not talking about this dog is good that dog is bad.  There are GREAT dogs in each catergory, what you want is a dog that is great for the purpose you want.  I agree with Echo and go visit if you can and get a chance to see different styles of dogs and interact with them.  Keeping in mind what YOU do personally with a puppy in terms of training and socialization can make or break it for you too.
