A friend of mine gave her german shepherd Ivomec Plus instead of the regular Ivomec.  She gave him the correct dosage.  I was wondering if this is safe to give to her dog.  Please let me know as soon as possible. Because if it isn't safe, is there anything she can do if it is already in his system??  Thank you.

So the Ivomec Plus, is o.k.???  I have used just regular Ivomec before and had not see the plus--thanks again

ivomec is the main ingredient in Heartguard (heartguard plus has pyrantel, an intestinal wormer).  Ivomec 1% injectable (registered brand name of merial pharmaceuticals) is FDA approved for worming cattle and swine.  It is the exact same drug used in heartguard, it is not FDA approved in the injectable form, for use in dogs.  However with that said, I know many DVM's who use this product on their own dogs as long as stated above, the dosage is correct.  A 50 mL bottle of Ivomec 1% retails for approximately 40-60 dollars and will last an average breeder of 8 or 9 dogs for most of the season.  Keep in mind there are different strengths and you should NOT use anything other than 1% if you are going to use Ivomec.

I have always been warned not to use the Ivomec Plus,  but as Von Symphoni states the 1% injectable (labeled for cattle and swine)  is what we have used also.  (not injected to dogs though)

correct Echo, I should have stated that.  It should be drawn up and we mix it with about 3 cc of Lixotinic and give orally (alone it is QUITE bitter and please dont ask me how I know this personally... curiosity kills lots of different things :)

Von Sym: Echo is correct....I just did a little research    The Plus has a wormer for flukes in the liver and you do not give it to dogs......Sure glad this thread was invented and I just learned something.....I use Ivemec sparingly and very low dosaage so I think Im ok....just plain Ivemec on the labe.   DO NOT USE IVOMEC PLUS,  ON DOGS....

I do know that when I went to Tractor Supply, the guy there told me not to get the plus which I never did anyway, but he told me his best friend used it and it killed 3 of his dogs.  Not good!  Just plain Ivomec!
