I have a pink papered dog that I am trying to register with the akc.  do i need to first transfer the dog in germany into my name? also the akc documentation states that I need a copy of the registration certificate and the original pedigree.  In SV, is this one and the same?  Thanks.

You'll have to transfer the dog into your name to register the dog with the AKC.  Also, as of March 1, 2006, you have to have a DNA profile of the dog.  Of course, the DNA profile kit is available thru AKC.  You need a copy of the pink papers (pedigree) original registration, date of purchase, Bescheinigung, 2 pics of the dog- 1 stacked and 1 front pic.  I hope this helps.  I would not send originals to them b/c they are known for "misplacing" paperwork.

Yes, the SV needs to list you as current owner first. There are three ways of doing this - make sure you are listed on the back of the SV papers, prev owner has signed dog over and you have signed off as new owner, then send the originals back to the SV, or send a notorized copy back to the SV, or send in a transfer form that the previous owner had signed then you do not need to send the papers to the SV. When you have been recorded as current owner, request an AKC Bescheinigung from the SV, which is a formal confirmation of ownership that the AKC needs to see. You send a copy of that confirmation letter, a copy of all 4 pages of the SV pedigree, the foreign registration form and 2 pix of the dog to the AKC. Originals are not required though some underlings at the AKC tell you that you do, I would not send off originals. Send me an eMail or phone number for the proper contact to address it to at the AKC. Remember that you also need to do AKC DNA nowadays. You can do that before you get the actual registration.

The process may sound like it's complicated but once you deal with the European transfer the process with the AKC is rather simple.  I just did it for the first time with my dog and was a bit nervous about sending the originals but was concerned if I didn't send them it'd hold up the registration so I took my chances...everything worked out and I got the pink papers back.  I also sent the DNA kit in at the same time.  Honestly that took longer than the actual registration part.  I only received word that the AKC received the DNA sample but it could be another 3-4 weeks before I actually get the documentation that it's been recorded.  I didn't want the hassle of dealing with the SV myself so I had the breeder take care of that before I had my dog shipped to me ( for a small fee).  Just save copies of everything you send to the AKC for your own records in case you want to call to follow up on the status.  Good Luck!
