I fed Fromm years ago, not sure if the formula changed but I could buy it bulk really reasonable. I liked it, my dogs did well on it.

I  feed RC GSD 24 and like the results, great coat, skin and energy.  I will say that, if your dog is not real active, it will tend to put on weight so you wil need to cut down on the rations.

I guess I should clarify,This particular dog has been on the 24 for 2+years and does'nt have that nice shiny coat etc.I am having to supplement, oils, some meat etc which I dont mind, however I should not have to supplement if the food is all that.

Dominec not all dogs do well on all dog foods. If you don't like the RC I would just go ahead and try something different. I feed a little Canidae but mostly RAW. Canidae comes in a few types ALS (All life Stage) Chicken (Lamb) Rice, and Platinum (I think) The ALS has more meat than the others. Its a good food, has not been on any recall lists, is reasonable at $27.95 a large bag, comes with (here anyway) a buy 12 get 1 free.... you can google it for more info.

Trailrider,

I agree Canidae is a good food, and like you said, not all dogs do well on all foods.  I had one dog out of several that I could NEVER get firm stools on Canidae.  But the rest did pretty well - the drawback with me was that here it runs $31.99 and up - more expensive than yours, and a lot more than some of the other brands I've fed.  The other thing was I never felt my puppies got enough from the ALS, and was wishing Canidae had a PUPPY food which delivered more.  After trying numerous brands (including RC) over several years., and very gradual changeover, I wound up going back to Pro-Plan, which MY dogs simply do better on.

Another thing to note is genetics...  some dogs genetically have a harsher coat than others, even within the same breed - I have two female littermates that have the NICEST coats, and I know this is genetic.  They get the same food as all the other dogs, but have always had the most incredible short "plush" coats.  So no matter what you feed, if your dog has the genetics for a stiff, harsh coat, it will no more soften up than you could soften and shine a wire-haired breed.  JMHO

altostland I guess there is a big price difference depending on where you live! I used the ALS but my female was itchy on it, she is itchy on most dog foods though. So I switched to the chicken & rice and she is OK on that. I don't feed it to much. My old girl just passed on Friday, very sad but it was time. I had the dog food here mainly for her as she had fistulas and did better BM's on it. I use to feed ProPLan Turkey & Barley some years ago, got nice coats with it!

I also have a 6 month pup that has the stiffer fur. My other dogs coats are so soft and nice on RAW but not her...
